Sometimes it takes an old photo to remind you how far you have come.

From farmers markets and convention floors to Whole Foods, Central Market, restaurants, cafés and tea houses across the country, we have spent years introducing people to a plant that has been growing here all along.

There have been a lot of tables, a lot of samples, and a lot of “wait, what is yaupon?” along the way.

Now we get to see yaupon in places we used to dream about, including The Washington Post.

This is a little farmers market time capsule and a very good reminder of where we started🫶🌿

Yaupon is the only caffeinated plant native to North America, and it’s the only ingredient in our tea. It’s also a plant we spend a lot of time removing.

Across Texas, yaupon has grown into dense thickets in places that were historically open grassland. Left unmanaged, that overgrowth crowds out native grasses, changes wildlife habitat, and affects how water moves through the landscape.

Our harvest is part of the restoration process. We remove yaupon where it has become overgrown, mulch the brush back into the soil, seed native grasses, and work with landowners to restore the natural systems that kept these landscapes in balance.

The leaves we harvest along the way become CatSpring Yaupon.

It’s an unusual way to build a supply chain, but one we think is worth pursuing. As demand for our tea grows, so does the amount of restoration work that demand can support.

I have spent more than a decade building a company around yaupon.

For most of that time, I talked about the ecology, the restoration work, the certifications, and the business.

What I didn’t talk about was myself.

I am a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation.

Like many Indigenous families, mine experienced interruptions that reached far beyond geography. My ancestors drank yaupon for centuries, but that everyday relationship with the plant wasn’t something that was passed down to me.

For a long time, I wasn’t sure how to talk about that honestly.

Then, a fellow Chickasaw citizen told me something I’ll carry for the rest of my life:

“Interruption cannot be reason for severance.”

That sentence changed how I understood both my citizenship and my responsibility.

This isn’t a story about claiming authority over a tradition.

It’s about acknowledging what was interrupted, honoring what survived, and helping create space for more Indigenous voices to tell their own stories.

Restoring the land is only part of the job.

We want CatSpring to be a place where people can build a life, not just earn a paycheck. Sometimes that means flexible schedules. Sometimes it’s a pair of work boots. Sometimes it’s simply giving someone the opportunity they weren’t getting anywhere else.

Stewardship doesn’t stop at the fence line and neither do we.
