🛡️ Mineral of the Week: Zinc

Zinc may be needed only in small amounts, but it plays a big role throughout the body—especially in supporting a healthy immune system!

Zinc helps immune cells develop, communicate, and respond when the body encounters germs. It also supports the protective barriers in the skin and tissues that act as one of the body’s first lines of defense. When zinc levels are too low, the immune system may not function as effectively.

Beyond immunity, zinc helps the body make proteins and DNA, supports wound healing, contributes to healthy growth and development, and plays a role in our ability to taste and smell.

Great food sources of zinc include:

🥩 Beef, poultry, and pork
🦪 Oysters and other seafood
🥛 Milk, cheese, and yogurt
🥚 Eggs
🫘 Beans, chickpeas, and lentils
🥜 Nuts and seeds
🥣 Fortified cereals and whole grains

☀️ Vitamin of the Week: Vitamin D

Vitamin D is often called the “sunshine vitamin,” but its role in the body goes far beyond spending time outdoors!

Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, making it especially important for building and maintaining strong bones and teeth. It also supports healthy muscle movement, communication between the brain and body, and normal immune-system function.

Unlike many vitamins, vitamin D is naturally found in only a small number of foods. Good sources include:

🐟 Salmon, trout, and other fatty fish
🥛 Vitamin D-fortified milk or plant-based alternatives
🥣 Fortified cereals
🥚 Egg yolks
🍄 Some UV-exposed mushrooms

Our bodies can also make vitamin D when the skin is exposed to sunlight, but the amount can vary based on the season, time of day, location, skin pigmentation, clothing, sunscreen use, and time spent outdoors. Sun protection is still important, so sunlight should not be treated as the only source of vitamin D.

Breast milk alone generally does not provide enough vitamin D for infants, so breastfed and partially breastfed babies are commonly given vitamin D drops. Parents should speak with their pediatrician about what is appropriate for their baby.

A combination of nutritious foods, safe outdoor activity, and personalized guidance can help your family maintain healthy vitamin D levels.

🍊 Vitamin of the Week: Vitamin C

Vitamin C is about much more than reaching for orange juice when someone gets sick!

This essential vitamin helps support the immune system, protects cells from oxidative stress, improves the body’s absorption of iron from plant-based foods, and plays an important role in producing collagen for healthy skin, connective tissue, and wound healing.

Because vitamin C is water-soluble, the body does not store large amounts of it. That means it is important to regularly include vitamin C-rich foods in your family’s diet.

Great sources include:

🍓 Strawberries
🥝 Kiwi
🫑 Bell peppers
🥦 Broccoli
🍊 Oranges and grapefruit
🍅 Tomatoes
🥔 Potatoes
🍈 Cantaloupe

Babies typically receive vitamin C through breast milk or properly prepared infant formula, while older children and adults can usually meet their needs by eating a variety of fruits and vegetables.

A colorful plate is one of the easiest ways to help the whole family get the nutrients they need!

🍼 5 “cleaner” infant formulas we like

Choosing a formula can feel overwhelming—especially when every label seems to say something different. This list highlights a few options parents may consider when looking for features such as organic ingredients, goat milk or A2 proteins, fewer added oils, and gentle processing.

The five included in this post are:

✨ Kendamil Cow or Goat
✨ Bubs Goat Milk
✨ Bobbie
✨ HiPP Organic
✨ Holle Bio

There is no single formula that is perfect for every baby. What works well for one child may not be the right fit for another, and “clean” does not automatically mean a formula will be easier for your baby to tolerate.

Save this post for your next shopping trip and share it with a parent who is trying to navigate the formula aisle! 🤍
