💙🩵 September is Su***de Prevention Month 🩵💙

Every day, CRNAs care for patients during some of their most vulnerable moments, often while carrying an enormous level of responsibility ourselves.

It is rewarding work, but it is also high-stakes, high-stress work.

Long hours. Difficult cases. Unexpected outcomes. The pressure to perform. The expectation that we remain calm when everything around us is not. And sometimes, the quiet belief that because we are the caregivers, we should always be able to handle it.

This September, the AZANA Wellness Committee encourages our anesthesia community to make space for something just as important as caring for our patients: caring for ourselves and caring for one another.

Check on your colleagues, not only when something seems wrong. Ask twice. Listen without judgment. Make it okay to say, “I’m struggling.” And remember that asking for help is not a failure of strength or professionalism.

This month, we also pause to remember those we have lost to su***de and mental health struggles. We honor their lives, their friendships, their contributions to our profession, and the spaces they left behind. 💜

And we hold close the families, friends, colleagues, and loved ones who continue to carry those losses. Su***de does not affect one person, it leaves ripples throughout families, workplaces, friendships, and entire communities.

May we continue building an anesthesia community where wellness is part of professionalism, vulnerability is met with compassion, and no one feels they have to struggle alone.🩵💙

If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988 for the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.

~ AZANA Wellness Committee🩵💙

A quick shout out to our two AZANA NAR representatives Bahadur Ghataorhe (University of Arizona) and Preston Woods (Midwestern University) for making the trek to Annual Congress in Boston between busy schedules! We are lucky to have them and appreciate their continued advocacy.

We’d love to hear about other NARs attending annual congress as well! Rep your school in the comments!

In recognition of Juneteenth, AZANA celebrates the enduring contributions of Black nurses and nurse anesthesiologists whose leadership, innovation, and commitment to education have strengthened our profession and improved patient care for generations.

This year also serves as a reminder of an important milestone in nurse anesthesia history: 75 years since African American CRNAs were welcomed into the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA). Through pioneers, educators, and leaders, Black nurse anesthesiologists have played a vital role in expanding opportunities, advancing education, and shaping the future of our profession.

From the Harlem Hospital School of Anesthesia to today’s nurse anesthesia programs across the country, their legacy continues to inspire excellence, mentorship, and service.

As we commemorate Juneteenth, AZANA is proud to honor the rich history of nurse anesthesia and the individuals whose dedication continues to advance our profession and the patients we serve.

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander month, JP Moyle is being spotlighted as a valuable member of our CRNA community.

1) Who are you?

I’m JP Moyle, a Filipino-Canadian CRNA at Mayo Clinic Arizona and a member of the liver transplant team. I earned my Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from the University of Miami in 2023.

Before becoming a nurse anesthetist, I worked as an ICU nurse for more than 15 years across four countries—the Philippines, the United Arab Emirates, Canada, and the United States. Those experiences shaped both my perspective and my practice. Today, I’m dedicated to delivering safe, precise anesthesia in high-acuity environments while caring for patients during some of the most critical moments of their lives.

2) What makes you uniquely you?

Being born and raised in the Philippines, being part of the LGBTQIA+ community, and working as a nurse in four different countries exposed me to a wide range of cultures, beliefs, and life experiences.

Those experiences taught me how to adapt quickly, communicate with empathy, and connect with people from all backgrounds. They also helped me become more culturally aware and intentional in how I care for patients, support colleagues, and build relationships within the healthcare team.

3) How does your authentic self help shape the provider that you are?

My cultural background and life experiences shaped my work ethic, resilience, and deep respect for every patient I care for. Being authentic means showing up fully—focused, accountable, compassionate, and willing to learn from others.

It helps me build trust with patients and collaborate effectively with my team, especially in high-pressure situations where calmness and connection matter most.

As someone who understands the challenges of adapting to a new environment, I’ve also developed a passion for mentorship. I strive to support nurses—especially internationally trained nurses—as they pursue higher education and navigate their own professional journeys.
