Healthcare leaders invest heavily in recruitment, compensation, wellness initiatives and professional development to attract and retain talented employees.

Yet one factor that directly influences each of these priorities often receives significant attention only after a serious incident occurs: workplace violence.

Workplace violence has become one of healthcare’s most pressing operational challenges. According to 2023 data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, healthcare and social assistance workers accounted for about 73% of all nonfatal workplace violence injuries resulting in days away from work. The American Hospital Association has similarly identified workplace violence as a growing threat to employee well-being, workforce stability and patient care.

For many healthcare organizations, workplace violence prevention remains primarily a security function or regulatory requirement. Policies are written, training is completed and incidents are documented. While these activities are important, they represent only the foundation of an effective prevention strategy.

Leading healthcare organizations are increasingly recognizing workplace violence as a leadership responsibility and an operational priority that directly influences workforce stability, employee engagement, patient safety and organizational performance.

Infection prevention and control programs have evolved from primarily regulatory and patient safety functions into strategic drivers of organizational financial performance, public reputation and competitive positioning. Recent changes to national quality measurement methodologies, coupled with increasing alignment across value-based purchasing, public reporting and safety grading systems, have amplified the organizational impact of healthcare-associated infections.

Preventable infections create legal exposure and can negatively affect patient experience. Today, a single HAI event may influence multiple quality program ratings simultaneously, including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ Star Ratings, the Hospital-Acquired Condition Reduction Program and Hospital Value-Based Purchasing Program, and the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade program.

Additionally, because HAIs often require extended treatment, they can increase length of stay, drive up the total cost of care, increase Medicare spending per beneficiary, contribute to readmissions and increase litigation risk—creating compounded financial, operational and reputational risks.
