This Sunday, we honor World Cancer Survivor Day and celebrate the strength, resilience and courage of all those impacted by cancer. At the Enloe Health Regional Cancer Center, we are inspired every day by our survivors, their stories, perseverance and their hope.

We recognize not only those who have faced cancer, but also the families, caregivers and care teams who walk alongside them. Your journey reminds us why this work matters.

To all survivors in our community and beyond, we celebrate you today and every day.

Chris Rock’s DreamFlights Honoring Vietnam Veterans

Thanks to an invitation from Nicole Quiring, phlebotomist at Enloe Health, veterans Donald Anderson and Twede Danley took to the skies in a Boeing Stearman, piloted by DreamFlights’ volunteer pilots. The flight marked the fifth annual DreamFlight held in memory of Northgate Aviation co-founder and veteran Christopher J. Rock.

Northgate Aviation, in collaboration with the nonprofit organization DreamFlights, proudly hosted the annual Chris Rock Memorial Dream Flights event at Chico Regional Airport on Monday, May 4.

Alicia Rock, President of Northgate Aviation, shared:
“It’s an honor to do this in recognition of my dad, who served three tours in Vietnam from 1967–1969. We focus on Vietnam veterans who are living shorter lives and facing serious health challenges due to the chemicals used during that war. My dad received care at the Enloe Cancer Center for many years after developing blood cancer from Agent Orange. This event helps bring attention to the extra sacrifices these veterans have made.”

She added, “And they love it! We host a barbecue and make it a special day. Every year, there are miles and miles of smiles.”

Thank you to Nicole for thinking of our veterans, and to Northgate Aviation for hosting this meaningful and important event.

We’re proud of Aimee Martinez, RN, who recently became an Oncology Certified Nurse. This certification requires a minimum of 2,000 hours of adult oncology nursing practice, continuing education hours and successful completion of a 165-question certification test. Oncology nursing is a dynamic specialty that requires ongoing professional development, and certification must be renewed every four years.

Aimee shares, “I’ve worked at Enloe since 2006, spending nearly 17 years on the inpatient oncology unit before moving to the infusion clinic three years ago. My career has allowed me to see all phases of cancer care, from supporting patients at diagnosis, to managing complications in the hospital and now I get to play a bigger part in the treatment phase. Patients sometimes joke that they ‘hope they never have to see us again,’ and the best feeling is running into them years later in the community and seeing they’re doing well. Becoming an Oncology Certified Nurse is an important milestone and reflects my commitment to continuing to learn and provide the best care possible.”

Thank you, Aimee! We celebrate your accomplishment.

Melanoma & Skin Cancer Awareness Month
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and early detection can save lives. During Melanoma & Skin Cancer Awareness Month, Enloe Regional Cancer Center encourages our community to take simple steps to protect their skin and prioritize prevention.

You can help reduce your risk by:
• Using broad-spectrum sunscreen daily
• Wearing protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses
• Avoiding tanning beds
• Performing regular self–skin checks
• Talking with your health care provider about skin cancer screening

If you notice a new or changing spot on your skin, don’t wait to have it evaluated.
At Enloe Regional Cancer Center, we are committed to prevention, early detection and compassionate, comprehensive cancer care for our community.
