Please welcome our newest members of the Cancer Center Patient & Family Advisory Council. The council’s purpose is to create an opportunity for patients and/or their family members to work together with members of the Cancer Center team to promote the best possible medical and emotional outcomes for patients and family members. The council meets once a month and members serve one or two-year terms. Thank you for serving our cancer community in this way!

Celebrating More Than 20 Years of Healing Through Art

What began as a community-driven effort to honor the experiences of breast cancer survivors through creative expression has grown into a lasting tradition of hope and healing. Rooted in the dedication of survivors, artists, and volunteers, our commitment to healing art reflects the belief that art can bring comfort and strength during the cancer journey.

Since the first Healing Art Gallery exhibit at the Enloe Regional Cancer Center in 2002, nearly 100 North State artists touched by cancer have shared their work through rotating exhibits featuring painting, photography, quilting, sculpture, poetry and mixed media. Today, that commitment continues throughout the Enloe Health Gonzales Comprehensive Cancer Center, where original artwork by North State artists helps create a welcoming and healing environment for patients, families, caregivers and staff.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Healing Art Committee — past and present — whose vision and dedication have sustained this remarkable program for more than two decades. Their work has ensured that healing extends beyond medicine, offering moments of peace, reflection, encouragement and joy to all who experience the art on display.

Honoring the artists, volunteers, and visionaries who created this legacy, we look forward to the next chapter of healing through art — bringing hope, comfort and connection to all who walk through our doors.

Saturday is National Surgical Oncologist Day, a time to recognize the expertise, compassion and dedication of the surgeons who play a critical role in cancer care. Through skilled surgical treatment and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, they help improve outcomes and quality of life for patients and families facing cancer.

Enloe Health is proud to have exceptional surgical specialists, including surgical oncologists and breast surgical oncologist who, alongside their clinical support staff, play an integral role in the care we provide.

A big shoutout to Enloe Health Education for their outstanding work developing and delivering the Life Safety Training program for the new Enloe Health Gonzales Comprehensive Cancer Center!

More than 300 staff members have participated in these required trainings, helping ensure a safe and welcoming environment for patients, visitors and team members. The Education Department coordinated the Life Safety session, supported individual and department scheduling, assigned required eLearning modules and partnered with departments across the organization to prepare staff for opening day.

Thank you for your dedication and commitment to excellence. Your efforts are helping lay the foundation for a successful launch of the Gonzales Comprehensive Cancer Center and ensuring our teams are ready to provide exceptional care from day one.

At a special session of Shifting My Perception, we experienced Rhythms of Health — an interactive workshop for individuals living with a serious illness and their caregivers that explores the healing power of rhythm and music.

Research has shown that traditional drumming practices may help improve cognition, support physical healing, strengthen the immune system and promote overall well-being. This dynamic experience invites participants to connect with the rhythms within and around us through a variety of percussion instruments from around the world, including drums, shakers, bells, rain sticks, claves, and even hand clapping and foot stomping.

A new chapter in cancer care will arrive in late September.

In preparation, on Aug. 10, Enloe Health, in collaboration with the Chico Chamber of Commerce, will celebrate the ribbon cutting for the new Gonzales Comprehensive Cancer Center — a historic milestone for patients, families and the North State community.

The center will open in late September.

After the ceremony, guests are invited to explore the new center during self-guided tours and learn more about the advanced services and technology available close to home.

Welcoming Brandy Kristiansen to the Cancer Center Leadership Team

As we are preparing for the move into the new Enloe Health Gonzales Comprehensive Cancer Center, we are honored to introduce Brandy Kristiansen as the new supervisor in our Hematology Oncology Department.

No stranger to Enloe, Brandy Kristiansen has been a part of the Enloe team for 17 years and has dedicated the last 12 years to oncology.

Originally drawn to the field by her fascination with cell biology and abnormal cell proliferation, Brandy quickly discovered that what she loves most about oncology is the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with patients and their families. She believes that some of the most important moments in care come from being a trusted source of support during life's most challenging times.

One patient in particular has stayed with Brandy throughout her career. She called Brandy every day with questions, and toward the end of her cancer journey, began ending each conversation with, “I love you.” It is a memory that continues to remind Brandy of the trust and connection that makes oncology nursing so meaningful.

Brandy first heard about the vision for a new Cancer Center when she joined Hematology Oncology 12 years ago. At the time, she had no idea that this dream would eventually become a reality. Today, she is excited to play an even greater role in helping shape the future of cancer care in our community.

Fun fact: Before entering health care, Brandy started her career in the veterinary field. She is an animal lover and enjoys spending time with her four horses and three dogs.
Her philosophy on patient care is simple:

"I treat patients the way I would want myself or my family members to be treated. Our patients are likely going through the biggest crisis of their life, and they need the steady kindness of their nurses to help them through."

Survivor Tip from Cancer Survivor Luis Ojeda

In early 2022, I found a lump on my neck. I went to get it checked. At first, they thought it was an infection and gave me antibiotics. But it kept growing. I went back to my primary provider, who was very concerned. He immediately ordered labs and a biopsy — and that’s when I was diagnosed with lymphoma.

I started chemotherapy just six days before my 52nd birthday. I have a great family. They sent me fun videos and messages that my daughter turned into a book. Having such a big, loving family made all the difference. I always knew I wasn’t going through it by myself.

The nurses during chemo were also great. I wasn’t worried when I was in their care. I really appreciated the whole team.

I also got support and shared healing activities with others dealing with cancer. My friend, who was like my big brother, was dealing with cancer treatment as well. We communicated every day via phone calls and encouraged each other to be positive. He reminded me often that I was going to be OK.

Another friend who was dealing with cancer would walk with me in upper Bidwell Park. We had real conversations, and I remember something he said about fear. He said, “We get into our car every day, and we are at risk of dying in an accident, but we don’t spend all day thinking about it.” That helped shift the way I looked at it. My faith and prayer also gave me strength.

To stay well, I made some changes. I started eating better, going for walks and listening to podcasts that helped me stay positive. I also stopped drinking alcohol.

If there’s one thing I want others to understand, it’s this: Pay attention to your symptoms and go to the doctor. You need to catch it early. Sometimes people avoid checkups because they don’t want to miss work or think it’s nothing. But it’s just one day. Ignoring symptoms could cost you your life.

As for how cancer has changed me, I don’t know if I’ve changed, but I do value my time differently now. My parents and siblings are in Mexico, so I visit more often and make a point to show up for family events — because you never know. Life is fragile.

My wife and I have learned not to take things for granted. We are more grateful for the day, more loving, more thankful for each other and the things we have in life. Soon I’ll only need to be seen for an annual follow-up. It’s all a blessing.
