Happy three month kidney-versary to Windsor! Three months is a big deal in her world… first because her new kidney is thriving. Second, because it means fewer medicines! She’s thrilled to say good-bye to three of her medications and to have a decrease in dose in another.

Three months also marks an “opening up” of her world as we can begin adding in more social encounters. Fortunate timing with school coming up! Windsor had a meet and greet with her wonderful new teacher today at the HIGH SCHOOL! Yes, we will soon have a high schooler in the house.

Windsor is also very excited to be granted a Wish from Make-a-Wish. For James and me, seeing her joy at the prospect is magic enough. We are counting our blessings in so many different ways these days.

Thank you all for your continued prayers and support in this journey. 💕

It’s a two-iPhone-day while waiting for labs at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Windsor is eleven weeks post-transplant and getting stronger every day. Her new kidney is working beautifully. This girl is a rockstar!

Windsor is recovering from an infection. We always knew this season would be a rollercoaster… she’s such a rockstar though. Gracious and always trying to be helpful. She’s starting to get enough energy to be bored again, so I take that as a good sign! Thank you for your continued prayers.

Hi all. As we celebrate 8 weeks of Windsor having a brand new kidney, I spent some time looking back through my camera roll. There have been highs and lows, joys and fears. Through it all, the themes of gratitude, joy, and celebration emerged. One of the absolute SWEETEST ways our family was celebrated was with this beautiful collection of silly goose cake pops and treats. If you are looking for delicious and gorgeous sweets, please check out this local small business! Tracey Riley Thanks to each and every one of you for traveling this journey with us!

It might look like “just a box of raisins” but this represents so much more! A favorite snack, Windsor had to give up raisins a few years ago as her kidney failure worsened. Now, thanks to a living donor kidney, Windsor can enjoy this favorite food again. First raisins post-kidney transplant! ☺️

Windsor had a successful stent removal yesterday. Her wonderful Complex Care coordinator was also able to arrange a routine hearing test under sedation as well. (We try to group procedures like these whenever possible.) It was a long day, and we were thankful to get home to rest!

Happy one month kidney-versary to Windsor! It’s hard to believe we are already a month into this new chapter! Today Windsor will have a long day at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital with labs, transplant clinic, and a procedure under anesthesia to remove a stent. (This stent was placed to help the kidney and bladder heal from surgery.) Please keep Windsor and her surgeon and team in your prayers today.

TLDR: Windsor is doing well with busy days and lots of meds!

Transplant recovery is made up of tiny victories and hurdles most people never notice. People see the transplant chapter and think the story ends there… But healing has its own busy schedule.

Clinic days, like today, start early! Waking up by 6am to be downtown by 7:30. A blood draw at the lab at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital… just checking that her new kidney is settling in and doing its job.

8:00 a.m. means it’s time for Morning Meds on the go! Kidney medications are carefully timed. For Windsor that means 2 “big” med times per day, and 3 smaller med times.

Next a check-in with the transplant team. Vitals, reviewing the labs with Windsor’s wonderful doctor, adjusting dosages going forward, and any other concerns on all sides. And boy are there sides! There are never fewer than four team members, and often many more. Doctor, fellow, pharmacist, social worker, transplant coordinator, dietician, nurses… a whole village of people helping Windsor heal.

Once we head home, we enjoy a late breakfast. (Yep, most of these meds are on an empty stomach.) Some movement time, like short walks and swinging, help her little body get stronger one step at a time. 2pm and 4pm are “small” med times, so we coordinate meals around the empty-stomach meds.

And of course a nap at some point because healing is hard work!

The day wouldn’t be complete without snuggles with Tobah, giggles, plenty of music, and little bits of ordinary life.

8pm is bedtime and also a “big” med time. It’s our cuddle and story time, my personal favorite time of the day.

And, last but not least, midnight is a “little” medicine time. For those who know Windsor’s history of insomnia, you’ll know I find it ironic and vaguely distressing to wake her up for meds! It’s a very strictly timed medication to protect her kidney from rejection though, so I have two alarms set to make sure!

Transplant recovery isn’t just medicine and appointments, though it feels like it sometimes. It’s a careful balance for us that we never look so hard at the kidney that we forget to look at the little girl standing in front of us. It’s helping her learn to be a kid again. And of course, Windsor keeps showing us what resilience, grit, and contentment-in-the-face-struggle truly looks like.

During the rollercoaster of recovery, we are learning to savor the quiet moments. In between the transplant clinic appointments, lab draws, and constant medications, there are times to exhale and just be ‘us’ again. Today’s best therapy: a little extra time with Tobah!
