The first 10-day Vipassana course in Virginia was held in 2002 at Camp Virginia Jaycee near Blue Ridge, Virginia. The organization of the first course by a handful of meditators was a huge task. There were many factors that had to be considered during the initial planning stages, such as finding a suitable site, arranging to bring a teacher in for the course, ensuring there was an adequate number

of attending students, and putting financing in place to cover initial deposits and the ongoing expenses to support the running of the course. The success and organization of the first course prompted the management of the camp to offer the facilities to us for courses during their off season. In 2004 a summit was held in Maryland to bring all of these regions together to plan the work of establishing more and more courses in this area. This has culminated in 2005 in the creation of a Trust to organize further Vipassana activities in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Anapana meditation is an invaluable technique from Ancient India, which can help us to live a balanced and peaceful life in every situation.

Anapana means observation of natural, normal respiration, as it comes in and as it goes out. It is the first step in the practice of Vipassana. Anapana meditation is very different from techniques that are based on the artificial regulation of breath. There are no rites or rituals involved in the practice or presentation of Anapana https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyM_c3wSh8s

One should live peacefully and harmoniously in accordance with the law of nature—not harming oneself or others. Now this art of living is difficult to learn in old age, so the training should start at a young age. In the schools, children should learn the art of living a healthy life. Their entire life is ahead of them - S. N. Goenka

Spring Dhamma Service Period
Sunday, May 24 – Wednesday, June 10, 2026
Dhamma Pubbananda needs your help preparing for the Spring season! After a winter of wind and storms, we are ready to beautify the grounds and undertake needed maintenance and construction projects. One exciting project is to extend the woman's walking area into the woods.
These Service Periods are enriching opportunities to serve alongside fellow Old Students, deepening your practice. If you enjoy working outdoors or with your hands, this is a wonderful time to contribute to the Center's growth in the company of your fellow meditators.
The Program
All Old Students are welcome to apply. The daily schedule is designed to support your practice while you are serving at the Center:

Meditation: Three group sittings daily.
Service: Morning and afternoon work periods focusing on gardening, household tasks, maintenance, and construction.
Inspiration: On selected evenings, we will play special discourses and talks given by S.N. Goenka specifically for Old Students.
Teacher Guidance: An Assistant Teacher will be present for part of the period to conduct sittings, lead Worker’s Metta sessions, and answer questions about your practice.

How to Participate
We invite you to join us for all or part of this period: https://www.dhamma.org/en-US/schedules/schpubbananda
A Note for Cooks: If you have the volition to help prepare special meals during this time, please reach out to us directly at [email protected]
