Small changes can teach you a lot about your health.

One simple strategy discussed on Episode #177 of the Get Healthy Tampa Bay Podcast: try taking a 10–15 minute walk after meals. This small habit may help support healthier blood sugar levels, improve digestion, and increase daily movement.

You can also experiment with pairing carbohydrates with protein, healthy fats, or vegetables to help promote more stable energy throughout the day.

Remember, you don't need to change everything at once. Small, consistent habits often lead to meaningful results over time.

🥜📚 One of my favorite presentations at the food allergy conference today was from a dietitian who introduced two concepts I hadn’t heard described quite this way before: the “vehicle tax” and the “calorie tax.”

For many patients undergoing oral immunotherapy (OIT), allergens need to be mixed into a food “vehicle” every single day to help maintain tolerance. Sounds simple enough… until you start adding up what that means over time.

🍦 What food is easiest to mix with?
🍫 What will a child reliably eat every day?
🍭 What masks the taste best?

Sometimes those vehicles can come with extra sugar and calories, creating a “tax” that patients pay in order to receive treatment.

As a doctor who spends a lot of time talking about reducing added sugar and improving nutrition, it was a fascinating reminder that medicine is rarely one-size-fits-all. Every treatment decision comes with tradeoffs, and every patient has different goals, risks, and priorities.

The challenge is finding a balance between helping patients safely tolerate foods while also supporting long-term health and nutrition. It also highlights why working with a dietitian can be so valuable during OIT.

It’s one more reason why food allergy treatment requires a team approach—including the doctor, dietitian, patient, and family working together to find solutions that fit real life.

Learning so much at and looking forward to bringing these ideas back to my patients at Clearwater Family Medicine & Allergy.

⚽️🇺🇸 Making Time for the USA World Cup Opener 🇺🇸⚽️

I’m spending the weekend at a food allergy conference learning more about oral immunotherapy and how we can better help patients with food allergies—but you can bet I’m still making time to catch the USA vs. Paraguay World Cup game today. 🇺🇸

Watching this match brings back some incredible memories. Many years ago, I had the opportunity to travel to Paraguay on a Habitat for Humanity trip. It was truly an experience of a lifetime. I loved getting to know the people, learning about the culture, attempting to practice my Spanish (which sadly has gotten much worse over the years 😂), and of course playing soccer with the locals.

One of the things I love most about soccer is how it connects people across languages, cultures, and backgrounds. No matter where you are in the world, all you need is a ball and a little open space.

Today I’ll be cheering for Team USA, but I’ll also be thinking about the amazing people I met in Paraguay and the memories that have stayed with me all these years.

Now if only my Spanish skills had aged as well as those memories. 😅⚽️
