Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Learn about the ethical precepts of yoga
• In the eightfold path of yoga, the first principle is a set of ethical precepts known as the Yamas. B.K.S. Iyengar considers these principles to be absolutely crucial - the beginning and the end of yoga practice.
• The yamas provide guidance for how to relate to others in the most positive and harmonious way.
• The five yamas are non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, moderation of sensual desires, and non-greed.
• Read about the yamas in any translation and commentary of The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Reflect on these principles and how they can influence your approach to your yoga practice and to daily living.

Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Practice friendliness towards one and all
• In Chapter 3 of the Yoga Sutras, the sage Patanjali says that we gain moral and emotional strength through practicing friendliness to everyone we encounter.
• Through mindful practice, we can develop the qualities of compassion and benevolence towards all beings.
• B.K.S. Iyengar writes that this practice leads to a state of equanimity, and consciousness becomes freer of desire, anger, greed, lust, pride, and envy.
• Study Sutra III:24 and reflect on how to cultivate an amiable disposition that spreads happiness to all.

Amy displays both strength and lightness in this arm balance, the Eight Bends Pose. The strong closing of the knees around the arm helps make the pose stable.

Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Focus on the balance of effort and ease
• In any pose you do, search for the optimum blend of work and release, and of action and receptivity
• Try doing about 80% of your usual effort and see what happens. Does this create more space for breath and awareness?
• Then see how relaxed you can be while still using strong muscular effort in a pose. Can you contract the needed muscles while keeping the face and the breath soft?
• Sthira is steadiness and stability, and sukha is comfort and delight. All yogic practices should have a balance of sthira and suhka.

The ropes are one of the most valuable props that BKS Iyengar invented. Among many other benefits, they have an unmatched ability to cultivate both strength and freedom in the shoulders. Rope 1 alternates a forward bend with a backbend, and you can see how the ropes help Karen move into her full range of motion in both.
