Before you hire anyone to help with your loved one's senior care at home, there is one question you need to ask first: Are you a medical or non-medical company?

Why this one question matters so much:

When you're hiring help for an aging parent, it can feel like everyone is offering the same thing, just with slightly different branding. But behind the scenes, there are very real differences in what each company is legally, clinically, and practically able to provide.

In our latest blog we dive into why this is going to be one of the most important questions you could ask.

We hear from families: "Will a senior care company refuse to work with my parent because of their diagnosis?"

We want to be clear. Navigate Wellness is not afraid of mental health. And with the right support, families don't need to be either.

Mental health for seniors isn't only shaped in therapy sessions. It's shaped by what happens in day to day routines, medication consistency, staying connected, having someone who actually knows your history and notices when something shifts.

That's what we do. Not by fixing everything, but by making sure no one is navigating it alone.

When we met this couple, the wife was exhausted from years of caring for her husband, who has dementia. She needed help desperately. But he wasn't ready for strangers in his home.

Here's what people with dementia experience when new caregivers show up: Their nervous system screams, "I don't know you. You're not safe." If we'd rushed in trying to help him immediately, we would have made everything worse.
So we did something different. We cared for her first.

We took tasks off her plate—meal prep, appointment coordination, and medication management. We gave her space to breathe. And while we were caring for her, he was watching. Getting used to our faces. Hearing our voices. Seeing us interact gently with his wife.

We left him alone. We didn't force interaction. We didn't try to prove ourselves.

After a few months, something shifted. He started making eye contact. Responding to greetings. Letting us help with small things. He invited us in.

Now we care for both of them—and he feels safe with us because we never rushed him.

This is dementia care done right: Support the caregiver. Give the person with dementia time to trust you. Create stability instead of disruption. Keep them home where their nervous system can stay calm.

We don't replace caregivers. We walk alongside them. And we earn trust slowly, on their terms.

This is our biggest roadblock with clients. We respect their independence completely - it's their house, their rules. We make recommendations transparently and explain consequences, but they make all decisions. We don't wag fingers or take control away. Our goal is to empower them to make good decisions while preventing them from leaving their home.

A true titan. A woman who dedicated her life to the craft of caring for people. She will be missed. She made the world a better place to live in.

This evening, we remember and honor Doris Caroline Davis, who served as Executive Director of the Missouri Nurses Association for 17 years and dedicated her life to advancing nursing in Missouri and beyond.

A registered nurse, educator, mentor, and advocate, Doris left a lasting impact on countless nurses, students, colleagues, and healthcare leaders throughout her remarkable career. Her passion for nursing, commitment to service, and unwavering support of the profession helped shape the future of nursing in our state for generations to come.

We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, former colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Her legacy of leadership and compassion will not be forgotten.

We find ourselves doing things that I wouldn't necessarily advertise that we do for a service. But we can't help but be intimately involved in our clients' day-to-day activities.

Recently, I was at one of my clients' houses, and I noticed how beautiful her flowers are. They span her entire yard! I also noticed that she had two or three wasp nests that were all hanging out right outside of her front door. These wasps were prohibiting her from watering her flowers.

She told me she had called several pest control companies, but none of them were able to fit her into their schedule for at least a week. It was also a time when the weekend ahead was going to be over 100 degrees. She sadly told me that she knew her flowers wouldn't survive the heat without being watered.

I told her I'd go take a look at the nests. I got some wasp spray from her garage and took care of the nests.
Although it wasn't an incredibly heroic act, it did allow Linda to keep her flowers. It wasn't a big deal to me to do, but I know it was a big deal to her, and she is now able to continue to enjoy her flowers that bring her pride and joy daily.

These small gestures our team does help keep people doing all the things they enjoy. We don't charge extra for them. They are just a perk of being our clients and ways that we strive to go above and beyond for those in our care.
