For blind and low vision musicians, the Midwest is doing it best! 👏

A study out of Indiana University Bloomington authored by faculty there says that blind and low vision musicians face unique challenges particularly when learning or performing with a bowed-string instrument such as a violin or viola. 🎻

This article that we are sharing, written by the Violin Channel, says “ to help bridge these gaps, the study suggests practice designs focused on non-visual and real-time calibration, including an augmented bow tracker that can signal direction deviations, a bow-hold aid to monitor hand tension, and a wearable forearm band to track left-hand alignment.”

Once again we want to shout-out our neighbors in Indiana for doing this work. This is an exciting development for not only musicians but for the visually-impaired community as a whole. ☺️

VOICEcorps recognizes October as Blindness Awareness Month. 👁️‍🗨️

According to the CDC, 1 million Americans have complete and total vision loss along with the 7-9 million individuals who have “significant” vision loss. Many more are under-diagnosed.

What does this mean? 🤔
You or someone you love, a co-worker, a neighbor, or a friend are part of that statistic.

VOICEcorps is a FREE broadcast service you can utilize to keep up with the news (local and national), with what’s being printed in magazines and books, and as a source of entertainment.

Say hello to VOICEcorps volunteer Gary Dougherty! 👋🏻

24 years ago, Gary was reading The Columbus Dispatch when he saw a few brief vignettes on various organizations, with VOICEcorps being one of them! He was then drawn to volunteer with us because of his interest in reading, and the rest is history! 💙

A major deciding factor for Gary to donate his time reading to others is due to his family history of eye heath issues which he says, “deepened my commitment.” He currently live reads the Columbus Dispatch on the weekends.

When asked about his favorite book and/or genres to read Gary says, “I was once a voracious reader with Stephen King among my favorite authors as well as Michael Connelly, James Patterson, David Baldacci, John Sandford, and other purveyors of crime drama.” 🕵🏼‍♀️

Gary has recently retired and is looking to find some new hobbies but currently he remains an 18 year ticket holder for the Columbus Clippers and absolutely loves spending quality time with his 4 grandchildren.

We are so grateful for Gary and all of our volunteer readers that help to ensure that our 24/7 365 broadcast is full of kind, caring voices that deliver vital information to our listeners.

Dolly Parton passed away on August 25th but left a legacy of literacy for all children, including those who are blind or visually impaired. 🦋

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library has, to date, sent over 100,000 braille books to children who are visually impaired, according to this article from TODAY written by Maura Hohman. The Braille Tales program is in partnership with American Printing House and began distributing braille books in 2011.

Dolly famously once said “all children should grow up in a home full of books” and she surely did the work to try to make that a reality for the millions of children in America who have registered for the Imagination Library program. 💛

Our volunteers record books that air all week long for the enjoyment of our listeners, many of whom are low vision or blind, but also for those who have a print disability such as Parkinson's, dyslexia, MS, and many others.
