For Rachel Lapidus

For Rachel Lapidus On July 27th, 2011 Rachel went into Cardiac Arrest. We were told Rachel would never walk or talk again. Look at her now! This all changed on July 27th 2011.

Rachel was a perfectly healthy 19 year old girl. She had graduated high school and was in college full time plus working a full time job. She had a boyfriend and drove a nice little yellow convertible. Rachel has always been a loving person growing up. Especially to her little brother who she always had an awesome bond with. She loves people, she loves animals, and would go out of her way to try t

o help who ever and where ever she could. Rachel had dreams of being a Special Education teacher and all this was taken away one July night. While in the middle of a heated argument with her cousin Rachel all of a sudden stiffened up and dropped. her heart just stopped. We performed CPR within 4 minutes of the incident but Rachel's heart did not start up for almost 9 minutes. Because of this Rachel is suffering from an Anoxic Brain Injury (Lack of Oxygen). When this first happened we were told there was no chance for quality of life because she was down too long. As parents, you would not want to hear something like that about your child. So we fought for her survival with her. We pushed for rehab and after almost a week of arguing with the doctors and Insurance companies finally, Rachel was moved to Rehab Hospitals of Indiana. This approval from the Insurance company was for 3 days. 72 days later Rachel walked out of that rehab and her recovery still continues today. Rachel is a miracle and continues to amaze the doctors who we are all trying to prove wrong. Rachel now has an amazing opportunity ahead of her. Rachel qualifies for HBOT Therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment which enhances the body's natural healing process by inhalation of 100% oxygen in a total body chamber, where atmospheric pressure is increased and controlled. It is used for a wide variety of treatments usually as a part of an overall medical care plan. Under normal circumstances, oxygen is transported throughout the body only by red blood cells. With HBOT, oxygen is dissolved into all of the body's fluids, the plasma, the central nervous system fluids, the lymph, and the bone and can be carried to areas where circulation is diminished or blocked. In this way, extra oxygen can reach all of the damaged tissues and the body can support its own healing process. The increased oxygen greatly enhances the ability of white blood cells to kill bacteria, reduces swelling and allows new blood vessels to grow more rapidly into the affected areas. It is a simple, non-invasive and painless treatment. After the phone consult we were told that RACHEL IS TREATABLE! Her cognitive problems, speech problems, even some of the physical problems are all treatable with HBOT

As parents, after what we have been through to hear those words and would again do ANYTHING we can to make this happen so we are asking for you to help be the miracle for Rachel Lapidus. She spent 10 days on full life support and 72 days in intensive inpatient rehab at Rehab Hospital of Indianapolis. She now faces years of outpatient rehab to regain basic self-care skills. Rachel's parents, Randy and Robin Lapidus, have been working very hard with Rachel and their efforts are paying off. Even though Rachel has a long way to go, her recovery so far has been miraculous. Help support the Lapidus family in their time of need. You can donate by going to www.gofundme.com/MiracleForRachel

Rachel was excited today that she was finally going to get another snail. She already has a small orange one she named blossom, but insisted she needed another one. She had been telling us she didn't want a brown one or another orange one. We explained to her that we wouldn't know what colors they had until we went. She just kept saying "They will have different colors, I just know it." Sure enough we walked in and she spotted this little blue fellow. They also had a white one but she thought that was a boring color. She carried this guy home and by the time she got out of the car she said, "I'm naming him Bluey!" So we now have 2 Mickey Mouse fish, one orange and one blue named Mickey and Minnie, and 2 snails, one orange and one blue named Blossom and Bluey. I told her tonight when she randomly asked ,"Can I get that chameleon I saw today?" My first reaction was, NO MORE CRITTERS! Especially no chameleons, or lizards of any kind. We already have a cat that loves to play with salamanders on the porch. Rachel is excited about going to a Luau tomorrow. She has her outfit ready and said she's getting up early tomorrow so I can help her with her hair.

Rachel was looking forward to REACH and going to the movies. She was not looking forward to the heat though.
Thankfully they were inside today. Rachel called me after they got back from the movies and said we forgot to pack her lunch. I told her we did pack it, and after searching we came to the conclusion it was accidently eaten by someone. We have sent in some 'emergency ' meals, so I told her to have one of those. Apparently she didn't like any of those choices, so she had her snack, and the sides I had sent with her lunch. When Randy picked Rachel up she told him she was hungry, so they stopped at jaggers so she could get a kids meal. When she came in she told me she didn't really get the movie. Randy said staff told him you had to have watched the roadrunner cartoons to get the movie, so we would probably think it was funny. Rachel is already talking about another movie she wants to see and said maybe they can do that for their one on one. Tonight before bed Rachel started looking up her outfit for the see me shine fashion show.. She didn't get to take part in it last year because she was recovering from her surgery, so she's excited about this year.

Rachel was not a fan of the heat today. She went to let the cat out this morning and when she opened the door she said, "OH no! It's already getting hot outside. I think I'll stay in." I did manage to get her out to run an errand with me, but she wasn't wanting to be out long. We watched movies, finished putting laundry away, and talked about things we have planned for the rest of the week. Rachel is looking forward to going to see Coyote vs Acme tomorrow. She also saw another new movie coming out that she said she might see if she can go see that as a one on one this month. Rachel went to bed reminding me that Friday she's going to a Luau and she wants to wear her hair down. I'm sure I'll be reminded a million more times over the next 2 days.

Rachel was ready for REACH this morning. She was excited to tell her friends about her snail hanging from one of the fake plants in the fish tank this morning. She wasn't there long though, by the time Rachel had breakfast and went to get dressed the snail was back on the bottom of the tank. Rachel was a little bummed when I picked her up and told her the heat index was too high for a route. When she realized how hot it was though she agreed staying inside was a good idea. We spent the evening getting some laundry finished and enjoyed a delicious supper Randy cooked on the grill. Rachel checked out some movies at the library today so when she headed to bed she decided to watch one tonight. She must have picked a really good one because we didn't hear much from her tonight. Tomorrow it's going to be another hot day so Rachel and I plan on checking out some of her crafts she has been stocking up on for the winter.

Rachel did get to sleep in this morning and was ready for brunch as soon as her feet hit the floor. She was also already talking about her grocery list for this week, what they have planned for REACH, and reminding us we needed to find a hawaiian shirt for Friday. She's looking forward to going to a Luau with her friend at REACH This afternoon after looking for a Hawaiian shirt Rachel finally said "Just go on Amazon, we can find it there." I think we spent about an hour looking online before she found what she wanted. Thankfully it will be here Tuesday. Rachel is finally sleeping after asking a million questions about what we have going on this week. None of us are looking forward to the expected high heat index, but will make it through.

Short and sweet tonight.

Rachel enjoyed a day if hanging out with mom in the ice cream truck. She spent the morning visiting with other vendors, people watching, and chatting with friends at the Farmers Market. This evening we were at East High School for the Bartholomew County Bears Football games. Rachel had fun watching the little boys play football and the little girls cheering on the sidelines. It was a long day and by the time we got home had supper and got cleaned up it didn't take her long to get in bed. The last thing I heard from her was "Pleaee don't wake me up early." I told her it don't plan on waking up early either so she doesn't have anything to worry about.

Rachel had a good day at REACH, even if she did call me thinking she needed a change of clothes because she sat on the ground at the park. I told her as long as her clothes weren't wet and muddy she would be find. She said, "OH ok.", and that was the end of that. This evening Rachel went with me to the last of 3 stops at a factory today. She enjoyed watching all the adults come out to get ice cream, and she even recognized a few from our routes. Tomorrow is a busy day for us with the Farmers market and the bears football for Rachel and I and a Sr project and the race track for Randy. Rachel said we all need to go to bed, which we agree, however she has decided it's time to play 20 questions about snail, fish, and sneakers. Hopefully we have finally answered all the questions and she can get some sleep.

Rachel didn't want to get up this morning. I woke her up and told her we needed to take the dog to the groomer and pick up an order at Sam's. She rolled over and said, "I'm staying home. I'll be fine right here. Wake me up when you get back." She doesn't mind staying home for just a little bit, and usually is in the living room when I get back. This morning she had fed and watered the cats and picked out what she was going to wear today. This evening we ran our route and Rachel was having fun talking with people. She also got to feed our friends Cane Corso his ice cream cone at our last stop. He may be big and has a loy of puppy left in him, but he was pretty good with Rachel while she fed him. He did try and talk us into another cone but he did not win. Rachel headed to her room right after supper tonight. She said she was tired and wanted to make sure she got enough sleep for tomorrow.

Although Rachel had to get up earlier than normal this morning, she was excited to go with Mom out to Neil's to watch one of the boys for a little while. Since I know it was going to be an early morning, I had told Neil I was going to bring my car seat, so Rachel and I could take him to breakfast to breakfast. Rachel loved that idea and couldn't wait to find out what he wanted to eat. Rachel had a blast helping with her nephew today. After breakfast, we headed back to their house. Rachel was fed mustard and yogurt from the play kitchen, got to toss a squishy ball back and forth, and even got some snuggles when her nephew made himself comfortable snuggled up next to her on the couch to watch a little bit of Toy Story. Of course, they also had woody and buzz right there with them. When we got in the car, Rachel said, "A 2 year old (he's almost 2) can wear me out, but that was fun." She then wanted to go home and take a nap before we ran our route. Rachel had a fun time on the truck. She was busy chatting with customers, and seeing a few new babies along the way. Some how she had managed to sneak her tablet with her tonight, so between customers she was also playing games. Once Rachel finished supper tonight and got comfortable she found a movie to watch and we didn't hear much from her tonight. I'm sure she will sleep good tonight and be ready for REACH bright and early.

Rachel was looking forward to today. She knew it would be a quiet day at REACH, but then she was going on a one on one outing. They did have to change their plans because where they had planned to go is closed on Mondays. They planned their evening while Rachel was at REACH and she had a fun evening. We now have yahtzee to add to our game collection. Rachel told me she likes to play that at REACH but needs a little help. Rachel was tired when she got home, but she still wanted to sit with us while we had our supper. She told us all about her day, and then we discussed our plans for tomorrow before she headed to bed.
