You hear, "Please do not eat or drink before surgery," but do you know why? 🩺 When your stomach is empty, there's far less risk of aspirating (accidentally breathing in) stomach contents if nausea occurs under anesthesia. Even a small amount of food or liquid in the airway can cause serious complications.

Your surgical team will give you specific instructions based on your procedure, including a directive not to eat or drink anything (including water, gum, or candy). Please stick to them.
