Healthy veins may run in the family—and so can vein problems. According to the National Institutes of Health, by age 50, nearly 40% of women and 20% of men will have a significant leg vein problem. Your risk may be higher if a parent or another close family member has experienced varicose veins or chronic venous insufficiency.

Family history isn’t the only factor. Aging, pregnancy, excess weight, inactivity, and prolonged sitting or standing can also affect circulation and vein health. Watch for symptoms such as bulging veins, persistent swelling, aching, heaviness, skin discoloration, or sores near the ankle.
