Another day, another adventure 🤍

This past week was full of them. From heading out for a false alarm labor… to locking my keys (and all my equipment 😅) in the car while trying to stay nearby just in case things picked up.

But honestly, there was a gift in that moment. I was forced to just be—watching butterflies at a place near and dear to my heart. And of course, my mom came to the rescue (as moms do), even showing up in her Sage Roots Midwifery swag.

Then the very next day—not one, but two babies were born. I had to call in a backup midwife for one while I stayed with the other. Both babies arrived safe and well!

I’m so grateful. For the people God has placed in my life—for my family, my friends, and the midwives I’m blessed to work alongside (and call friends).

We always say it takes a village to raise a child… and to care for a new mother. But it takes a village to care for the midwife, too.

And as we head into International Day of the Midwife tomorrow, I’m especially thankful to walk this path—serving families and being supported by such an incredible community of women. 🤍

Patience paid off. 🤍
After a false-start labor in the middle of the snowstorm, this sweet baby arrived today on a beautiful, sunny, icy day—right on God’s perfect timing. Midwifery is so often about waiting, trusting, and honoring the process.

Storms often bring babies… or not. This storm brought me a false-start labor Saturday night into Sunday, so no babies this weekend—just a whole lot of winter weather driving. Grateful for a husband who’s up for the adventure of hauling me through snow and ice and saving me the added stress. Today he drove me around for some postpartum checks, too.

He’s my medical courier, my backup midwife dispatcher, and my personal emergency transporter—basically a one-man support services department!

Sometimes on the way to a postpartum visit, the drive is long. I’ll catch a glimpse of God’s beautiful creation and snap a quick photo—just for me—so I can remember the moment. Later it shows up in my memories or I stumble across it while looking for something else, and I’m reminded of God’s glory and how I felt right then.

Today, as I was driving quite a ways to check on a mama and her new baby, something else struck me: she drove quite a ways to see me throughout her pregnancy. Faithfully. Over an hour each way. Trusting me to care for her and her unborn child.

I’ve been there as a mother. But now, as a midwife, I’m deeply humbled when clients make that kind of commitment—for midwifery care, for home birth, for themselves and their babies. Their dedication to their health and to quality prenatal care is incredible.

So often women who choose out-of-hospital birth are stigmatized, as if they’re reckless or settling for less. In reality, they’re doing the opposite. They’re investing time, resources, and intention to receive excellent care.

And they’re worth every mile—to the prenatal home visit, labor calls (real or false starts), and those tender postpartum days when care happens right in their own homes.

That sacrifice is a blessing—to me, to them, and to their babies. 🤍

One of the sweetest parts of this work is getting to care for truly wonderful families. Being invited into such tender moments through pregnancy, birth, and the newborn days is a real privilege — and days like this are a reminder of why I love what I do. Newborn exams and a few bonus baby snuggles don’t hurt either. 🤍✨

As we approach the last month of the year, I’m reflecting more and more on the births I’ve attended this year. I’m still putting together the right words, so stay tuned. But I know “humbled” is one of the most important words to speak to these experiences—humbled to have witnessed the lives of these tiny people and their mothers, fathers, and siblings at such an important moment: their birth.

A little while back, a sweet client brought me some wild sage on her way to her final postpartum appointment. It made me think about why I chose the name Sage Roots in the first place.

I chose sage because it represents wisdom—the wisdom I believe God gives mothers, the wisdom He instills in our bodies to know how to give birth, and the wisdom He provides our hearts and minds when we look to Him in all things, including the birthing and raising of our children.

I was also thinking about the kind of care I wanted to offer women and their families during such a transformational season of life. I wanted to share the wisdom I’ve gained through becoming a mother, attending many births, and watching women stretch and grow in ways they never imagined possible (pun intended!). That’s how the name was born—and even now, I pray for wisdom every time I help guide mothers through pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, and so much more.

The client who brought me this beautiful plant taught me so much. Through her own trust in herself, she reminded me how to trust myself as well. I am blessed and honored to have attended the birth of her baby, and I’m grateful for the lessons they gave me. I’ll carry that wisdom with me to every birth hereafter.

Got an order of supplies over the weekend. Marshmallow promptly decided this is his new home. This is my office so the paper (and the cat) cannot stay here. Yet, how can I possibly move it and disturb that cutie? 😻
