BUILDING COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Communication is one of the most important skills a child can develop.

Many children with autism or developmental delays struggle to express their needs, which can lead to frustration. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) focuses on teaching communication in ways that work best for each child—whether that means spoken words, gestures, pictures, or other tools.

Therapists help children learn how to ask for things they want, respond to others, and participate in everyday interactions.

As communication improves, many families notice reduced frustration and more meaningful connections between their child and the world around them.

April is Autism Awareness Month!

When we teach our children to be aware of the special strengths and challenges of an autistic person, we can also learn!

When we model kindness and caring to individuals who may have sensory or social interactions that may be unexpected, everyone benefits!

A GREAT way to LEARN is by reading! As we read--especially a story written by someone who can relay first hand what an autistic person experiences--the impact can be tremendous.

As part of Autism Awareness Month, Integrated Behavior Services would like to give away a copy of the book, "The Reason I Jump" written by Naoki Higashida, a very smart, very self-aware, and very charming thirteen-year-old boy with autism. This book is a one-of-a-kind memoir that demonstrates how an autistic mind thinks, feels, perceives, and responds in ways few of us can imagine.

Learning doesn’t only happen in a classroom—it happens everywhere.

One of the strengths of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is helping children practice new skills during everyday activities like playtime, snack time, or getting dressed.

By using natural routines, therapists help children apply what they learn to real-life situations. This helps skills become part of the child’s daily life, not just something practiced during therapy.

Over time, these everyday learning moments help children build independence, confidence, and the ability to participate more fully at home, school, and in their community.
