Building strength doesn’t always mean lifting weights. I do bodyweight exercises throughout my day and suggest them to my clients too. They require minimal space and equipment, making them a good fit at home, in an office or outdoors.

One favorite is a plank—holding a horizontal position on the floor or ground, resting on either your hands or elbows. Try to keep your body in a straight line and hold that position for 15-20 seconds to strengthen your arms, shoulders and core.

Chair dips are great too. Take a sitting position slightly in front of a chair and grip the chair seat, which should be just behind you. Push up until your arms are fully extended, then slowly lower yourself back down and repeat to work your triceps and shoulders.

Combine these exercises with other bodyweight movements like lunges and air squats for a good workout without picking up weights!

Resistance band stretches are a great idea for almost everyone. I recommend them to patients who visit my office, home patients and even patients who are on vacation.

These simple bands are powerful tools and I recommend leaving them on a coffee table or hanging from a doorknob as reminders to do simple exercises that really benefit you.

One is a banded pull-apart, where you hold the ends of a resistance band and slowly pull in opposite directions. The second is lat pull-downs—hold the band overhead, pulling down and out. Third, pin your elbows to your side and do a pull-apart. All three give a good stretch to your arms and shoulders.

We’ll cover more band exercises in our October newsletter, so be sure to sign up at the link in bio if you haven’t already!

Partner stretches are a great idea. I’m always encouraging my patients to find someone to stretch with, and having a partner also helps with motivation.

That’s really true this time of year, when days get shorter and it’s dark earlier and staying motivated to move gets tougher. This stretch, a straddle fold, is a great one to do with a friend.

My patient Holly is helping me demonstrate here. Sit facing your partner, gently grab their hands and pull them forward as they bend at the waist to help open tight hips, stretch hamstrings and release tension in the lower back.

Thanks to Holly for the assist and follow the gym, Fit Life Gym, that she and her husband have right here in downtown Cuyahoga Falls. Here’s the website for an exciting new program they’re launching!

A patient of mine came in today wearing these amazing socks!

She had taken a fall in her garage yesterday (she’s ok!) but thought it was appropriate to wear them.

After her visit with me, she said she felt so much better that she was going to have to take off her socks.

I love what I get to do, and these moments make my day!

Meet Ricky.

He’s a running back for Walsh Jesuit Football and has helped his JV team to a strong start this season.

Ricky came to see me during the preseason with a calf injury. There was no time to waste before games started, so he did several treatment sessions to boost his recovery. A combination of stretching, manual therapy, strengthening and Softwave got him back to full speed and he’s started the season strong—just like his team!

Good luck to Ricky and the rest of the Warriors this season as they chase another winning season.

This is a to a stretch I shared more than three years ago, and it’s still a great, quick shoulder stretch for anyone who spends a lot of time sitting at a desk every day.

Sit and clasp your hands in a prayer position, then extend your arms and raise them over your head. Next, place both hands behind your head, elbows out, and look up at the ceiling.

Add side rotations and bends for an extra stretch. In just a couple of minutes, your shoulders will feel a whole lot better.

Let’s connect if you need more ideas for stretches to keep you loose during your busy work or school days!

Are your shoulders painful or limited? Try this trigger point release with a foam roller.

Place the foam roller on the floor and lay on your side so the roller rests just under your armpit. Extend that arm straight, past your head, and turn your body toward that shoulder. Then, slide slowly back and forth, pressing the roller into the area between your shoulder blade and the bony top of your shoulder. After that, rotate forward and backward over the roller.

You should feel slight pressure in that area, loosening the muscles. Some discomfort is OK, but reduce the pressure if the pain is more intense. Repeat for the other shoulder and in 5-10 minutes, your lats should feel a lot better.

Foam rolling is one of the simplest, cheapest ways to boost mobility and relieve pain.

Let’s take a look at using a basic foam roller to help your calf muscles. I often have clients roll their calves to address a trigger point in this area and reduce soreness.

Start by placing the roller on the floor and laying one of your calves over the roller. Gently press the calf into the roller and roll the leg slightly from side to side as you move back and forth across the roller.

A small amount of soreness or discomfort is OK, but ease up if you feel a more significant level of pain. Foam rolling regularly only takes a few minutes and can help eliminate soreness that makes everyday activities tougher. If the pain is more severe, let’s connect and talk about more ways to address it to keep you moving forward.

Are you dealing with thumb pain? These simple stretches can be a big help.

First, hold your thumb inside a closed hand and rotate it gently up and down. Next, try to touch your pinkie finger with your thumb and slowly move the thumb across your hand until your hand is open. 👋🏼 I’ve had a couple of thumb injuries lately and these stretches have made a difference for me.

Thumb pain affects everything from writing to opening a jar or buttoning your shirt. One of the main causes is actually too much time texting or scrolling on your phone (yes, texting thumb is real). 🤳🏽

Along with these stretches, I treat these injuries using Softwave, massage, splinting and using kinesio tape. But one of the best things for a hurting thumb? Limiting texting or using a stylus while the thumb heals.

Putting down your phone is tough, but it’s worthwhile to give your thumb—and yourself—a screen time break. If you’ve got thumb pain, let’s connect and find the best treatment to get you back to full strength. 👍🏼

Neck pain makes many daily activities more difficult and I hear from lots of people who deal with it regularly.

If you’re in that group, here’s a simple stretch to help loosen up your neck muscles – and all you need is a towel.

Hold one end of the towel in your hand and extend that arm to the side, with the elbow bent upward at a 90-degree angle and the towel wrapped under that arm, then behind your neck and with the other end in your opposite hand.

Bend your neck gently away from the arm that’s bent at 90 degrees while rotating that arm forward. Switch the towel to the other side and repeat. It should feel like a nice, firm stretch that reduces stiffness and makes it easier to turn your head or bend your neck when driving or turning to see something beside you.

Try it out, let me know what you think and keep moving forward!
