These are the foundational things that have helped me the most during my healing journey, healing from PCOS (now renamed PMOS), irregular cycles, and hormonal imbalances.
- hormone balancing meals will helped to stabilize my blood sugar which in turn promoted hormone balance. this was the first thing i saw but results from - instead of feeling anxious and heightened, i began to feel calm and stable after meals.
- getting enough quality sleep per night is a driver of hormone regulation and production. it’s what helped my body recover and heal during my journey.
- switching from high intensity interval training and lots of cardio to low impact exercise like yoga and long walks helped to lower my stress and cortisol. there is a time and place for these types of higher intensity workouts, but personally for me when my hormones were tanked, low impact exercise is what my body needed.
- making sure i was detoxing daily. and i dont meal coffee enemas and liver cleanses. that stuff has a place but in this instance i am referring to your body’s natural detox processes - pooping, peeing, and sweating. if you aren’t doing these things daily, your body is not expelling toxins which can disrupt your hormones, gut health, etc.
- morning sunlight in my eyeballs every morning. instead of reaching for my phone, going to the window or outside if the weather permits, and getting some morning sunlight helped to reset my circadian rhythm. it signaled to my body to stop producing melatonin. it sets your body up on a healthy sleep/wake cycle, and promotes your natural cortisol rhythm. while we don’t want elevated cortisol, we do want a gradual decrease of cortisol throughout the day, with the highest levels in the morning.
