Sometimes I get a little salty about the number of providers offering "life coaching". Anyone can (and does) call themselves a "life coach" - there are no regulations on this profession, and it does not require any training, licensure or certifications whatsoever. Maybe I'm a little salty because I've been paying on student loans since 2003. 🙃 But in order to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I had to get my Master's degree, take some insane state tests, and also complete another 3,000 hours of supervised therapy before receiving my LCSW, which also requires 30 continuing education units every 2 years...📖
Today, a client shared with me that she had been meeting with a "life coach" prior to working with me. And the "coaching" that was offered put my client in a very dangerous situation, when my client's romantic relationship became physically abusive. I am not bashing all life coaches at all, but in this situation, it was extremely clear to me that the life coach had zero training or experience with these types of issues. And it's scary on so many levels. 😵💫
Now granted, I think much of what we've been formally taught is bu****it, but I also believe we need some training, and to learn in order to unlearn too. And I totally get it that people are sick of the mainstream options. But trained, qualified, weirdo therapists do exist. 👋 Always use your own discernment when working with any provider period. And as always, you are always your own best expert. 🫶🤍✨️
