fter 27 years of marriage, Tamika Carter and her husband, David, never gave up on their dream of growing their family. Earlier this year Tamika welcomed her daughter, Denim, after a journey filled with faith, perseverance and plenty of support.
Born at 35 weeks, Baby Denim spent time in the NICU receiving specialized care to help support her feeding. Throughout her stay, her care team went above and beyond to care for Denim and her family — even surprising Tamika with a baby shower to celebrate the arrival of her long-awaited daughter.
Today, Denim is thriving at home with her family. For Tamika and David, the experience has brought a renewed sense of peace and joy — and deepened their gratitude for the NICU team that cared for their daughter. With David having spent more than 30 years serving CHRISTUS, their family’s connection to our healing ministry runs deep.
Tamika’s advice to other expectant mothers, or those still hoping to become mothers, is simple: Trust in God’s timing. As long as He doesn’t say no, it’s always possible.
This NICU Month, we’re honored to celebrate stories like Denim’s and the dedicated teams who help give babies and their families the care, compassion and support they need from the very beginning.

As an international health system, we share knowledge, innovation and best practices that help us improve patient care around the world.
Recently, Emergency Physician Dr. Alonso Miguel Alvarez and Emergency Nurse Marisol Carvallo Yanez from our hospital in Chile visited East Texas as part of an informatics program focused on learning how an integrated health care system operates in the U.S. Their goal: to bring new ideas and insights back to their teams and patients in Chile.
During their visit, they toured our Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler and our Lindalec clinic, experiencing the people, the culture and collaboration that make our ministry special.

When Renato Garza Menchaca started experiencing throat discomfort, intense sweating, and difficult breathing, his wife and grandson rushed him to our Spohn South hospital. Thanks to the quick actions of Housekeeping Associate Justin Ontiveros, he was connected to the lifesaving care he needed just in time. Renato would later learn that a cardiac-related condition had caused fluid to build up in his lungs, leading to convulsions, and that even a delay of a minute or two could have dramatically changed the outcome. Following several days of treatment and recovery, Renato now considers the experience a second chance at life and says he's feeling much better. He is grateful to our staff for the care he received and to Justin for going above and beyond during a crucial moment.
