NEW ELDERBERRY RESEARCH — The Science Keeps Growing!
Researchers continue to take a closer look at elderberry (Sambucus nigra), and a newly published 2026 study is helping lay the groundwork for the next generation of elderberry research.
Scientists evaluated elderberry roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruit to identify reliable genetic reference markers for studying how genes are expressed throughout the plant.
Why does that matter?
These molecular tools can help researchers more accurately investigate the genetics behind traits such as fruit development, anthocyanin and other bioactive compounds, plant growth, environmental stress response, and potentially future cultivar improvement.
The researchers concluded that their work establishes an important foundation for future functional genomics and molecular breeding of Sambucus nigra.
