A University of Georgia study in the Journal of General Internal Medicine found lower cancer screening rates at federally qualified health centers (FQHCs), particularly among socially vulnerable patients, with the largest gaps in colorectal screening. Researchers say increased funding could improve outreach and access to preventive care amid high uncompensated care burdens.

HHS is expanding healthcare fraud enforcement with a new AI-driven program that will review at least five years of audits from states and federal grantees. Led by the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Financial Resources, the effort aims to identify persistent issues such as weak internal controls and ongoing noncompliance. Organizations that fail to address these findings may face penalties, including withheld Medicaid payments, reduced funding, or loss of federal awards.

The department will use AI to examine audits from states and other federal grant recipients, and potentially withhold funds if they aren’t able to fix errors.

Proposed Medicaid cuts in the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” could cost rural communities an estimated $137 billion, putting critical clinics at risk. While a $50 billion Rural Health Transformation Grant targets infrastructure, it doesn’t cover the daily costs needed to keep clinics running. Health experts urge Congress to act by creating a $3 billion Value and Innovation Fund to help stabilize community health centers and preserve access to care.
