No hate, no shade!!

Pelvic floor dysfunction affects the whole body, and it manifests all over the placeβ€” rarely just in the pelvic floor muscles. These are some of the sneaky ways I get a clue of what’s going on just by watching you exist πŸ‘€

Notice any of these in yourself? Might be time to see your local friendly pelvic floor provider πŸ˜…

I talk to so many women who were motivated and excited to get back to their exercise routines postpartum, only to be met with discomfort, dysfunction, and frustration that they’re not seeing the same results they had pre-pregnancy.

We don’t give nearly enough credit to how much the whole body changes during pregnancy and in deliveryβ€”and those changes don’t undo themselves without structured, specific therapeutic exercise. Pelvic floor physical therapy bridges that gap and helps heal the body and restore the structures needed to build strength from a sturdy foundation.

Travel can be tough on the pelvic floor, especially if you’re stuck in a car, train, or plane for hours. When you don’t have the luxury to move around freely and do all of the stretches and exercise, here’s what I recommend:

1. Fiber! Less movement and the inevitable stress of travel can impact digestion, and constipation puts a lot of stress on the pelvic floor.
2. Water, duh. Travel is dehydrating, which is another pelvic floor no-no. Set reminders and keep your water bottle full so you can always be sipping!
3. Gentle squeezes to engage and relax the muscles around the pelvis. Try short repetitions of squeezing and relaxing in different directions around your hips/pelvis on both sides. Sitting in one position can lend itself to a lot of tension, and this is a great way to remind those muscles they can relax.

Happy travels!!

If you’ve ever cut back on hydration before going out to try and control your bladder, this is for you!!

The less hydrated you are, the more concentrated your urine is. This irritates your bladder, and bladder irritation feels like having to p*e all the time! When you hydrate, you dilute your urine which keeps your bladder happy and your urgency lower.

If you struggle with feeling like you have to go all the time, try drinking water more consistently throughout the day and cutting back on going β€œjust in case.”

If you’re still having issues, we’re here to help!

Spring is SO BACK in Boston and that means spring running!

If you were inspired to get outside today but leaked (or felt like you were going to) while running, here are some exercises I often prescribe to my patients to help with hip mobility, pelvis stability, and overall lower body strength (all of which support a healthy pelvic floor!).

If you’ve ever been told β€œjust do kegels” and somehow your problems didn’t magically disappear, it’s not you!

The pelvic floor works as part of a bigger system, so training it in isolation doesn’t really make sense. And often times it misses the bigger picture all together!

In the third trimester we want to promote pelvis mobility to make delivery as easy as possible. These are some movements I prescribe that can translate into labor/delivery positions!

I teach all of this and more to my expecting patients so they can feel comfortable and confident going into delivery 🀰

If you’re always feeling your hip flexors in a plank, it’s probably because you’re overusing them!

These slight tweaks in form make a huge difference to insure that the load is primarily on the core and not hip flexors.

Think about lifting your front hip bones to your bottom ribs with your abs and pulling down through your sit bones to keep your tailbone neutral.

It can be frustrating and scary to wake up with back pain after a day of shoveling. But don’t panic!

Sort of like the low fuel indicator in your car, your body is letting you know you’ve pushed its limits.

Plus, shoveling is a grueling, repetitive activity that most of us aren’t specifically training for.

Don’t fret, take it easy with movement like walking, cycling, or gentle mobility, and you’re likely to be back in action the next day.
