🌼 Goldenrod: The Golden Sign That Fall Is Coming 🍂
There she is…that glorious splash of gold that starts popping up along roadsides, fields, and woodland edges just when summer begins whispering, “Okay friends, we're not going to talk about it…but fall is coming.” 😂🍂
Goldenrod has always been one of my favorite plants. She's beautiful, abundant, often overlooked—and she has been part of traditional herbalism for centuries.
And here's a fun little piece of weather lore I absolutely love:
🌼 When the goldenrod blooms, we're said to be about six weeks from the first frost.
Now, is Mother Nature operating on a perfectly calibrated six-week timer? Probably not.🤣 But plants have long been used as seasonal markers, and goldenrod's late-summer bloom is one of those beautiful signs that the seasons are turning.
And before someone says, “Isn't that ragweed?!” 👀😂
NOPE. Those gorgeous golden flowers are goldenrod!
Goldenrod gets blamed for a lot of late-summer/early-fall allergies because it blooms around the same time as ragweed. But here's the interesting part: goldenrod pollen is heavy and sticky, and it's primarily carried by insects rather than floating freely through the air. Ragweed, on the other hand, produces tiny, lightweight pollen that's easily carried by the wind.
So goldenrod has basically been taking the blame for ragweed's crimes for approximately forever. 😂🌼
🌿 And medicinally? This sunny little plant is a powerhouse for the coming season.
Goldenrod has a long history in traditional herbalism, particularly as an astringent and urinary support herb. Its astringent qualities are especially interesting as we head into cold and flu season because traditionally, goldenrod has been used to help tighten tissues and dry excess mucus and secretions.
That makes it an especially interesting herb for those times when you're dealing with that lovely “my entire head has become a mucus factory” feeling. 🤣
It's also traditionally used as a natural decongestant, helping support the body's normal response to congestion and respiratory irritation.
And those same plant compounds that make goldenrod so interesting to herbalists...including flavonoids and other antioxidant compounds...are part of why it's traditionally been used to support the body's inflammatory response.
🌼 Even allergies!
Here's the beautiful irony of goldenrod: it's often blamed for seasonal allergies when it's actually not the major culprit. Goldenrod blooms alongside ragweed, but goldenrod's heavy pollen is primarily insect-pollinated rather than windborne.
Goldenrod has also been traditionally used in herbal preparations for seasonal allergy support, particularly for its astringent and anti-inflammatory properties.
So while ragweed is throwing pollen around like confetti…goldenrod is over here getting framed for the whole thing. 😂😂
And honestly, that's one of the things I love most about plants like goldenrod.
They're not rare.
They're not exotic.
They aren't hiding in some faraway rainforest.
They're growing right alongside us, quietly marking the seasons and offering their gifts year after year. 🌿✨
Goldenrod is one of those plants that makes me stop and pay attention.
The golden fields say:
Summer isn't quite finished…
but autumn is already on her way. 🍂🌼
And around here, we like to pay attention to those little signs. 🥰
Have you noticed the goldenrod blooming yet? 🌼
