Happy six-year business anniversary!!

Here are my six lessons from this year!

For five years, I held a fundraiser; to celebrate my business anniversary this year, I needed to take a pause. But even without a fundraiser, meeting with my friends who, somewhere along the way, became volunteers and celebrating another year in business was a must. 💜

Celebrating all the moments is important. And even if you don’t see everyone who has been behind the scenes in this photo, they are there.

You can even read about a few of them in my book. 😉 Shameless plug, HA!

Here are my six lessons from this year!

1. Bet on yourself.

Not everyone is going to agree with you. Even the people who love you most may not see your vision. That doesn’t mean they don’t believe in you. Sometimes they just can’t see what you see yet.

2. Learn to say no.

I’ve learned there are actually only a few things I have to do to create a successful business. And learning the difference has given me so much more time, energy, and clarity.

3. Drink the coffee while it’s hot. ☕️

One more shameless plug, HA!

This one has become more than a book title. It’s how I try to live.

When things get crazy, go back to the foundational habits.

4. Allow new systems.

The systems that worked when you were starting out may not work when you grow. And that’s okay.

5. Deadlines are my besties.

When I give myself a date to get something done, it may not always happen on that exact date…but it gets pretty darn close. 😂

6. And far from least… relationships matter.

Coffee dates. Check-ins. Conversations. Introductions. The person you almost didn’t reach out to doesn't always have to be transactional. Sometimes it simply reminds you: You are not doing this alone.

Thank you to all of you! I am truly grateful for each and every one of you, from being tagged on this post to those cheering behind the scenes. Thank you!

If you don't know what they want from you, what do you do?

Do you:

💜 Assume or guess?

💜Ask for forgiveness, not permission?

💜Avoid asking questions because you're afraid of looking stupid?

Clear expectations help teams stay accountable, communicate better, and feel heard.

During my recent work with the J. Lorber Company operations team, we had an opportunity to talk about expectations between the team and their managers.

What did we see?

A lot of their expectations actually overlapped. That realization led to an important conversation: we may be more on the same page than we think.

Sometimes it's simply creating the space to ask:

"What do you expect from me?"

And then being willing to answer:

"Here's what you can expect from me."

Thanks, Michael Lorber, for supporting your team!

Are you a morning person or an evening person?

Personally, I am not very productive in the evenings, like at all. 😂

To me, it doesn't really matter which one you are.

What matters is becoming aware of when you are most productive and creating a schedule that works with your energy, not against it. 💜

That's exactly what we discussed during my virtual workshop with J29.

We talked about creating schedules that protect both our time and energy, including setting boundaries in three areas:

💜 Physical

💜 Emotional

💜 Time

We also talked about time blocking, which is one of my personal favorites!

Thank you, Sarah Tonelli, SHRM-SCP, for the opportunity to create a summer series for your team! I'm having so much fun continuing these conversations with J29, Inc.. 💜

I don't like being told I can't do something, even by my own voice in my head.

I started running because I wanted to prove to myself and my younger self that I could do it. What I didn't realize was not just the physical or the breathing challenge, but the mental challenge I would have to go through.

Which leads me to my next point: taking care of your mental health is so important; it is not just another hashtag or even a social media post. That voice in our head can have us believing we are not good enough, we are not loved, and more.

That's one of the reasons I love the work Colleen Duffy is doing.

This past weekend marked the 12th year of her 5K, created to bring awareness to the importance of mental health. And she doesn't stop there; her organization also supports chess tournaments, nature camps, and so much more.

I'll also be participating in the Miles That Matter Virtual 5K with Sonya Bohmann and the Construction Industry Alliance for Su***de Prevention throughout September.

"We all have the same 24 hours in a day."

Have you ever heard that saying?

It's true... but I also think we can look at it differently.

Yes, we all have 24 hours.

What we don't all have are the same priorities, responsibilities, or energy demands.

Hear me out. 💜

I'm not saying one person's priorities are more important than another's.

I'm saying that not all priorities require the same amount of time, energy, or mental focus.

For example...

My morning routine with my pups is absolutely a priority. But I'm willing to bet it doesn't require the same time or energy as a new parent's morning routine.

Or think about the workplace.

An accountant may spend the day focused on numbers and deadlines from a desk, while someone in the field is lifting heavy materials in the summer heat.

Both roles are important.

Also...

When a priority becomes a habit, it often takes less mental energy because you've created a routine around it.

That's why I enjoyed my recent Time Management workshop with the CI Services, a UniTek Global Services Company team. We talked about understanding the different priorities each department manages every day and how those priorities affect stress, communication, and teamwork.

Thanks, Matthew Applegate, for finding tools to support your team.

"It is not always what was said; it is what we heard." 💜

When we become defensive, our brains naturally make assumptions and interpret situations through our own experiences.

That's why communication is about so much more than words.

During my recent workshop with CI Services, we explored what happens when we become defensive.

💜 How does our body react?

💜 What are we actually hearing during difficult conversations?

💜 What tools can help us pause before reacting?

One of my favorite moments was watching employees have honest conversations about workplace frustrations they didn't even realize they were carrying.

Thank you, CI Services, for creating the space for your team to learn, reflect, and grow together. Investing in conversations like these is an investment in your people. 💜
