Dry mouth can become even more noticeable during hot weather, travel, and busy days when hydration slips. Saliva plays an important role in protecting teeth, helping neutralize acids, and maintaining comfort. When the mouth is consistently dry, teeth may be more vulnerable to decay and sensitivity over time. If this is something you notice often, especially with medications, it is a good topic to bring up at your next visit. Symptoms that seem minor at first can be more important than they appear.

The connection between mental health and oral health is more direct than most people — including most healthcare providers — realize.

People with depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other psychiatric conditions experience significantly worse oral health outcomes:

🔹 Many psychiatric medications cause xerostomia (dry mouth). Without saliva's protective effects, decay accelerates dramatically.
🔹 Depression and anxiety often reduce motivation for self-care routines like brushing and flossing.
🔹 Dental phobia is particularly prevalent in people with mental health conditions, leading to avoidance and delayed treatment.

If you or someone you love is managing a mental health condition and oral care has slipped, we want you to know: we're here without judgment.

One thing patients may not always see directly is how much continuing education matters behind the scenes. My Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry, or MAGD, reflects a deep commitment to advanced learning across many areas of dentistry. For patients, that matters because dentistry is always evolving. New techniques, better materials, improved diagnostics, and broader understanding all support better care. At Jackson Family Dentistry, lifelong learning is not just a line on a résumé. It is part of how I work to provide thoughtful, comprehensive care every day.

Summer drinks can be refreshing, but many are tougher on teeth than people realize. Frequent sipping of sweet tea, lemonade, sports drinks, soda, or flavored energy drinks can increase both sugar and acid exposure. That combination can contribute to enamel wear and decay risk over time. That does not mean you cannot enjoy them. It simply means moderation, water, and awareness matter. Small choices throughout the day can make a real difference for enamel and oral health.

Today is National Cancer Survivors Day, a time to recognize strength, perseverance, and the many personal journeys behind survivorship. At Jackson Family Dentistry, we know that health stories are often deeper and more personal than what shows on the surface. Today is a meaningful reminder to honor resilience, celebrate progress, and support those whose lives have been shaped by cancer. We are thinking of survivors, families, caregivers, and everyone whose life has been touched by that journey.

Summer can be fun for kids and a little rough on routines. Later bedtimes, extra snacks, sports, sleepovers, and travel can all make brushing and flossing easier to overlook. This is a great time for parents to give home care a quick reset and make sure children still have strong habits even when the school-year structure is gone. The goal does not have to be perfection. It just has to be consistency. A simple check-in now can help keep the whole season running more smoothly.

🧊 Do you chew ice? Most people think it's harmless. It's not.
Every time you bite down on an ice cube, you're putting significant stress on your tooth enamel — and enamel is actually brittle under that kind of force. The result over time: hairline cracks, temperature sensitivity, chips, and in serious cases, damage that requires a root canal or extraction.

And if you or your child has a strong, persistent craving for ice, that's worth a conversation with your doctor too — it can be linked to iron deficiency anemia.
Latest post on our blog covers everything: what ice does to your teeth, the extra risk for orthodontic patients, and how to break the habit.

Graduations, weddings, vacations, reunions, and summer photos are all around the corner. If brightening your smile has been on your mind, this is a great time to start the conversation. Cosmetic improvements often work best when they are planned thoughtfully and built on a healthy foundation. That means healthy teeth, healthy gums, and a clear understanding of what will work best for your goals. Whether you are interested in whitening or exploring other options, a consultation is the right place to start.
