This tragedy will keep happening as long as we ignore the fragility of the human brain. Not only do we lose these brave men die much too early, they suffer with so many issues that impact their families and communities.

The family of Aldon Smith has decided to send his brain to medical experts in Boston to see whether CTE played a role in the former NFL defensive lineman's death.

No parent would knowingly sign a form that said:

“Your child could face a higher risk of memory loss, depression, cognitive decline, or neurodegenerative disease later in life.”

But many parents are never given the full conversation around repetitive head impacts.

Informed consent means more than signing paperwork.
It means understanding both the benefits and the risks.

Parents deserve honest, evidence-based information so they can make the decision that feels right for their family.
