At our 2025 IRCP event, Dr Peter O’Meara, Professor in the Department of Paramedicine at Monash University and a course assessor for the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, shared insights on “Integrating community paramedicine topics into degree-level paramedic education programs: a strategic pragmatic approach.”

In his keynote, Dr O’Meara highlighted how community paramedics have adopted the knowledge, skills and behaviours of primary healthcare professionals, yet often lack access to higher education that enables autonomous, collaborative practice. He outlined an educational framework designed to bridge this gap, equipping graduates to practice as clinicians across primary care, acute and low-acuity settings alongside health and social service professionals.

At our 2025 IRCP event, Kevin Deramus, Agency Chief at Washington County EMS in Rural Texas, shared insights on creating “unreasonable expectations” within Community Paramedic models.

In his keynote presentation, he explained that Community Paramedic programs have been innovative since their inception. However, most have followed a reasonable and expected delivery model. Kevin demonstrated that, now more than ever, program leadership must embrace what may be considered “unreasonable” approaches to enable these programs to thrive and achieve more success in today’s climate.

At our 2025 IRCP event, in his presentation Beyond Triple Zero (000): Supporting Rural and Remote Communities through Paramedic Connect, Tom Doyle Byrne, Coordinator of Integrated Care at NSW Ambulance, shared insights into supporting rural and remote communities through integrated care initiatives.

The NSW Ambulance Paramedic Connect program integrates paramedics into the broader health workforce in small rural communities, providing community and primary healthcare while maintaining emergency response capacity.

Primary clinical activities included welfare checks, patient monitoring, and regular medication administration, with the program operating in small rural towns and remote communities.
