Today, we join millions around the world in mourning the loss of Dolly Parton. While she will always be remembered as a music icon, her legacy extends far beyond the stage.

For decades, Dolly devoted her life to creating opportunities for others through education, compassion, and inclusion. Through her Imagination Library, she inspired a love of reading in children across the globe by ensuring books reached families regardless of income or circumstance.

What many people may not realize is that Dolly’s vision for literacy was also rooted in accessibility. Through partnerships with organizations such as the American Printing House for the Blind, the Imagination Library offered adapted materials, including Braille and audiobook formats, helping ensure that children who are blind or have low vision could experience the same joy and opportunity that books provide.

At The Arc of the Three Rivers, we recognize how meaningful true inclusion is for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and for individuals of all abilities. Dolly’s commitment to removing barriers and creating access reflects the values we strive to uphold every day: that every person deserves the chance to learn, grow, participate, and dream.

Dolly once said, “If you can see it, you can be it.” Through her generosity and advocacy, she helped countless children see possibilities for themselves and their futures.

Today, we celebrate a life that made the world kinder, more inclusive, and more hopeful. Her music will live on, but so will the impact of her extraordinary commitment to helping others.

Rest peacefully, Dolly. Thank you for showing us what it means to lead with love. ♥️

We have some exciting news to share, and we couldn’t be more thrilled about the opportunities ahead for inclusion, connection, and community!

The Arc of the Three Rivers has been asked to partner with the City of Charleston Parks & Recreation Department to help develop training opportunities for their employees and our community focused on working, living, and interacting with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

This is an incredible opportunity to help build greater understanding, break down barriers, and show what can happen when people of all abilities are welcomed, included, and given opportunities to participate fully in their community.

And the benefits go far beyond the individuals we serve. Stronger inclusion creates a stronger community for everyone.

MOVIE NIGHT IS COMING BACK!

The Charleston Dirty Birds have invited us back to host another community movie event this October! And this time, we’re going BIG with a Halloween Double Feature!

But we need YOUR help choosing the movies!

Drop two Halloween-themed movie suggestions in the comments below. Family-friendly, funny, spooky, nostalgic….we want to hear what you’d love to watch!

Once we collect your suggestions, we’ll narrow down the favorites and put them up for a community vote. The TOP TWO will become our Halloween Double Feature!

We are incredibly excited about what’s ahead and grateful to have community partners who believe in creating spaces where everyone belongs.

We’ve seen so many people in our community reaching out to support the young man who was recently bullied, had his headphones taken, and had them destroyed. The compassion being shown to him and his family is exactly what a community should look like.

But we’d also like to reach out in another direction.

To the parents and families of the young people involved: We would like to offer you something, too.

The Arc of the Three Rivers works with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and we would love to sit down with these young men and their families. Not to shame them, embarrass them, or add to the public condemnation they are already experiencing, but to educate them.

What happened was wrong. It was hurtful, and there should be accountability for it. But we also believe that accountability and compassion can exist in the same space.

These are still young people.

A horrible decision, even one made publicly and with very real consequences, does not have to define who they become.

Sometimes fear, discomfort, ignorance, or simply not understanding someone who is different comes out in cruel ways. Education can change that. Exposure can change that. Conversation can change that.

We would love the opportunity to help these young men better understand autism and other developmental disabilities, to talk with them about dignity and inclusion, and most importantly, to help them understand the person behind a diagnosis.

Our hope would not be to minimize what happened. Our hope would be for something meaningful to come from it.

If these families are willing, our door is open. No cameras. No public spectacle. No humiliation.

Just an opportunity to learn, take responsibility, grow, and hopefully walk away from this experience as better young men.

We should absolutely rally around the person who was hurt.

But if we truly want to prevent the next person from being hurt, we also have to be willing to educate the ones who caused the harm.

Accountability addresses what happened. Education can help make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Update on our Phone lines: We asked Optimum at 2pm to forward our main number, 3043443403, over to a temp number for the time being till they can provide us with dial tone for the lines we have with them. This has yet to occur. Once this forward is completed you will be able to reach our Dunbar office at that number. Updates will follow!

We are currently experiencing a phone outage with Optimum and have had several missed appointments and promises by the company. We are working on a temporary solution to bring back service while we continue to wait for Optimum to resolve our issues. We will update you as soon as possible
