I created the Foraging ABCs a few years back to help us all remember some key components to ethical wildcrafting.
🌿
Today, we decided it would be well served in the style of Beastie Boys.
I can’t say that it was well served but my, my is it entertaining 😂
Foraging ABCs:
A- Abundant & Aware-
Basically, be aware that the plant is in abundance and not critical (endangered) or at-risk.
If it is low in population, leave it there if at all possible. If you must gather, do so with the greatest of restraint. United Plant Savers keeps a wonderfully updated list of these plants on their website.
B- Browse & Bring the right tools
Be sure to gather small amounts from several stands. Don’t gather all in one spot.
Reason- you may think a plant is very abundant if you see a lot in one stand but it actually may be the only stand for miles.
Our neighbors in nature also need our plant family, and if you take all of this plant in that area, they may not be able to easily access a host plant or essential food needed.
Bring the right tools means sharp scissors or knives so as to not rip the plant. Clean cuts are much easier for plants to heal.
C- Confident ID & Care
Of course you want to know you are actually gathering what you are wanting to gather.
And Care, care enough to know how this plant interacts in our ecosystem and how you can support it as it is supporting you. You acting as an intentional part of the ecosystem (which you are). Key Ecological Herbalism.
and finally,
Dont
Ever
Forget
Gratitude &
Humble
Intentions.
Mmmmm drooppp 😂😂. Beastie boys fans will definitely get this little drop
