Our deepest condolences to our USFS firefighter colleagues and friends, Ely Ambulance and Morse Township EMRs, and the whole firefighting/EMS community. Our hearts are with you.

The Eastern Area Complex Incident Management Team, under the command of the Superior National Forest and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources are aware that a medical emergency occurred on the July Lightning fires involving an individual assigned to the incident at approximately 10:40 am today, Tuesday, August 11, 2026, in the vicinity of Ely, MN.

Fire personnel and emergency medical services responded. The patient was transported to a medical facility for treatment. After arriving at the hospital, the patient subsequently passed away. When additional information is available and confirmed, an update will be provided.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and fellow firefighting community.

Due to concern for our citizens health and safety with the current air quality conditions, Music in the Park has been moved to the Eveleth Auditorium located at 421 Jackson St. The auditorium is air conditioned and will have some seating available, but guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs. We thank you for your patience and hope to see you there. The show must go on!

So this guy…

He started on Eveleth Fire Department and Ambulance in 1984 as a career firefighter/EMT, and has stayed with us ever since.

41 years.

He’s our partner who lightens our darkest moments, brings the calm in the storm, the wisdom and experience when it’s needed the most, the face whose presence has comforted thousands of patients in need, and the one whose humor has turned tears into smiles.

He has “raised” so many new and young EMTs, and even the kids of the once new EMTs who followed in their parents’ footsteps. Generations worth of individuals who have served our city with pride… all with the advice and knowledge that can’t be learned in a classroom or a textbook, but only through real life experiences and hard earned scars. A true mentor.

Thank you, Johnny Rauzi, for your selfless dedication to our community. There just aren’t enough words to express our thanks for all you’ve done and continue to do.
