Sunday Stats: Dog Bites & Children
Did you know that in one U.S. study, approximately 72% of dog bite injuries involving children ages 3 and younger affected the head or neck?
That’s a sobering statistic and an important reminder about child and dog safety.
When we hear about a child being bitten by a dog, we might assume the child was left alone with the dog.
But dog bites can happen even when an adult is right there!
Being present and actively supervising are two different things.
Dogs communicate through body language, and sometimes their subtle signs of discomfort go unnoticed. Other times, we may recognize the signs but aren’t sure how to respond.
Our goal isn’t to place blame. It’s to help families recognize potential concerns, understand their dogs, and create safer interactions.
