We frequently talk about benefits vs risks and cite studies with statically significant different outcomes.

We saw this making the rounds on socials today.

And we LOVE this graph. It highlights how graphs provide visuals but may not necessarily provide a neutral visual. The graph isn't incorrect, note the measurements on the side. But when we view it with the celebrities on it, it provides perspective about how visuals might influence.

A 100% increased risk of a risk that is 1 in 1000, only becomes 2 in 1000, or 0.2%. Yes, there's a statistically significant increase, but it doesn't mean the risk is very likely overall. But if we have a graph showing only 0-1% out of 1000, the 0.2% will look large next to 0.1%

This graph only shows a small portion of the measurements not the full 1ft-6ft measurements.

This can be a helpful visual when assessing benefit vs risk of things.

Health care in the United States is increasingly team-based, and doulas—who often provide emotional, physical, and educational support for patients during birth, the postpartum period, and beyond—are valuable members of many care teams.

ACOG’s new clinical guidance encourages ob-gyn collaboration with doulas and gives ob-gyns the tools they need to better understand a doula’s role. It also highlights the importance of stronger partnerships between clinicians and doulas, which can provide vital support across the lifespan—including during and after pregnancy—and can lead to better patient outcomes.
