This National Eosinophilic Esophagitis Awareness Week, Dr.Natasha Kamal is helping spread awareness about this chronic inflammatory condition of the esophagus. EoE occurs when eosinophils — a type of white blood cell often associated with allergies — build up in the esophagus and lead to inflammation and swallowing problems.

EoE can affect both children and adults, and symptoms may include:
• Trouble swallowing
• Food impactions (“food getting stuck”)
• Chest discomfort or reflux symptoms
• Feeding difficulties in children
• Abdominal pain or vomiting

Diagnosis typically involves an upper endoscopy with biopsies, and treatment may include dietary changes, acid suppression, or newer targeted therapies.

Awareness matters because many people live with symptoms for years before receiving a diagnosis.
