This workshop is designed to help families better understand the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process in Virginia and feel confident taking an active role in supporting their child. Participants will learn about the key components of an IEP, how decisions are made, how to prepare for meetings, and practical strategies to effectively support their child within the special education system.

Light snacks and coffee will be available beginning at 9:00 AM. Participants are encouraged to arrive at that time to network with other families, relax, and gather any materials that may be helpful during the workshop.

Training will be led by Tammy Burns, Executive Director of PEATC, the Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center

Event co-sponsored but PEATC and The Arc of Virginia, New Path Family Support Program

Note: The Parent Resource Center is the building with the triangular roof over the entrance, located between the Hanover County Central Office Building (200 Berkley Street) and Ashland Elementary School (201 Archie Cannon Drive).

DBHDS Division of Developmental Services (DDS) is seeking volunteers to become members of the Waiver Slot Assignment Committee (WSAC) who have knowledge of or experience with services for people with intellectual/developmental disabilities. Responsibilities include reviewing information presented of nominees for vacant and available Developmental Disabilities (DD) Waiver and hold confidential all information reviewed. DBHDS provides training specific to the DBHDS mission, all responsibilities, and the positive impact these waivers and services have to promote inclusion within our community.

WSAC members can determine how little or how much time they would like to volunteer. On average a WSAC lasts about four hours per Community Service Board (CSB). Virginia has 40 CSBs who at anytime throughout the year could have a WSAC to assign new or vacant DD Waivers.

WSAC members should not be current CSB, DBHDS employees or board members, not current employees, owners or board members of an agency providing waiver services, or a family member of an individual currently on the DD Waiver Waitlist.
