Women Veterans

The New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services Women Veterans Program invites all women who have served or are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces to attend the 2026 Women Veterans Day Celebration on Friday, June 12, in Rio Rancho.

Join fellow women veterans for a morning of connection, support, and recognition as we honor the service, sacrifice, and leadership of women veterans across New Mexico. The event will provide an opportunity to connect with others who served, share experiences, and celebrate the strength of the women veteran community.

Friday, June 12, 2026, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.
Sky Room Campus Park – Rio Rancho Parks & Recreation
2516 King Blvd. NE, Rio Rancho, NM 87144

Hosted by the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services Women Veterans Program.

With a very heavy heart, we tell you of the passing of Kelvin Akeson. 'Ake' was a retired Gallup Police Officer and also our very favorite bagpiper at our veteran events. He could always bring a tear to the eye when he played Amazing Grace.
Please join us in prayer as his soul ascends to heaven. We extend our condolences to his wife and family.
You will be missed, Ake!

It is not disrespectful to fly a burial flag that was used to drape a casket. The U.S. Flag Code and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs do not prohibit unfolding or flying a burial flag. The flag belongs to the next of kin, and displaying it honors the memory and service of your loved one. Keep the following considerations in mind if you choose to fly it: Material Considerations: Burial flags (like those provided by the VA) are typically made of cotton bunting. They are not designed as all-weather flags and will fade and fray faster if flown outdoors regularly. Symbolic Gestures: Many families preserve the flag in a ceremonial triangular fold and keep it in a display case, while others choose to fly it only on special occasions like Memorial Day, Veterans Day, or the anniversary of the passing. Flag Size: Burial flags are typically 5 by 9.5 feet—almost twice the size of a standard residential flag—so they require a tall flagpole (at least 20 feet) to be displayed properly without touching the ground. If you are ever unsure about how to properly care for or display the flag, you can consult guidelines outlined by the American Legion Flag Advocacy.
