Sam Smith, Health + Nutrition Coach

Sam Smith, Health + Nutrition Coach I’ve spent a lifetime complaining about how unhealthy our society/country/culture is. I am a fairly regular person. (If you eat chips with salsa, that’s healthy.

Georgetown Neighborhood Food Project As a result, I’ve also spent a lifetime reading, researching, and trying out ways to eat and live healthier than the average person in the United S

tates. I’ve also had an aversion to pharmaceuticals – the companies themselves more than the medications – and have read into alternative health treatments. Having said that, its important to know that I am not a typical skinny, granola-eating, make-up shunning, hippie naturopath. In fact, I love make-up, my favorite drinks are rum & OJ, Moscow mule, and a good margarita, and I can dig into a bag of tortilla chips with gusto. Right?) I do love doing yoga, though, and that’s my preferred form of exercise. So why did I want to start a blog? Well, mainly because I enjoy writing and was looking for a way to keep in practice. What better way to stay motivated than writing about a passion? And I get pretty passionate about food and health. Some bullet points. I:
- grew up in west Texas
- moved to Austin in high school (via San Antonio)
- earned a degree in Anthropology from UT-Austin (minor in Geography)
- traveled several times to France and England
- studied abroad at Oxford University
- lived in NYC for 4 years
- worked with a lot of famous movie people as part of a film industry non-profit

And now, I live in a suburb of Austin, Texas. I have two kids, and am step-mom to 4 more. I’ve worked as a graphic designer, program manager, and most recently as a Realtor. I love that I have a relationship with Jesus Christ and my church family at HCBC-Austin is amazing. I could go on… but you’ll find out plenty as you read through my posts.

One small shift is much easier and sustainable...
Looking back through some photos and post from a few years ago, I started noticing how clear my skin was. Granted, time causes some physical changes, and menopause brings even more of those changes... but I couldn't help but wonder if that's the only things that could be affecting me.
And then - light bulb- I realized I'm not practicing what I preach: health and beauty come from INSIDE! You ARE what you eat!
Even though I always make sure that plants are the largest part of my diet, I have stopped juicing, started my tortilla chip habit back up with a vengeance, and been a bit lazy about breakfast.
Today, I'm starting my morning with celery juice and ACV, like I used to. That's the only change I'm making for now, because one small shift is much easier and sustainable than an attempt at an overhaul.

For several years I have been in the habit of donating 10% of my income. I pay attention when I hear others talk about nonprofit organizations and I am always thoughtful and prayerful about where I will give my money. I have a small set of core recipients and the rest of the list changes as I learn about new needs.
It is my pleasure to do this, and I am more grateful for any increases in income because that means I can give away more!

Last week, I was fortunate to be invited back to a collaborative that I first started working with while I was with Food for Every Table: the Central Texas Regional Food System Council's Local Coalition Collaborative.

When I had to leave FET, it's meant I needed to leave the Collab. For me, that was one of many big losses related to that role.

Thankfully, through GNFP I find myself continuing the work on improving food access in WilCo, and have been able to re-join the group effort as the Collaborative has expanded.
