What if the “dad bod” is not a phase but the beginning of a trajectory that determines how capable you are for the rest of your life?
After age 30, men lose 3 to 8 percent of their skeletal muscle mass per decade. That number does not pause for busy schedules, stressful careers, or the demands of raising a family. It compounds. Skeletal muscle is not cosmetic tissue. It is the body’s primary site for glucose disposal, the metabolic engine that governs insulin sensitivity, hormonal balance, and physical resilience across decades. When muscle mass declines without intervention, metabolic rate slows, visceral fat accumulates, insulin resistance develops, and testosterone output drops as a downstream consequence. The body does not maintain what it is not required to use. Without progressive resistance training that places an increasing mechanical demand on skeletal muscle, the loss is not a risk. It is guaranteed.
The fathers who remain physically capable, metabolically healthy, and genuinely strong into their 50s, 60s, and beyond are not the ones who got lucky with genetics. They are the ones who treated progressive resistance training as a non-negotiable, not a hobby to return to when life slows down. The musclespan you protect right now determines the version of yourself your family has access to for decades. That is not a fitness goal. It is a legacy decision.
