We all know someone who has been affected by some degree of hearing loss. Dr. Fire is nationally renowned in the hearing industry.

The mission of Fire Audiology and Hearing Center is to provide the greatest degree of service, the best possible product and the highest level of satisfaction to our patients. According to the American Tinnitus Association, at least 2 million people have debilitating chronic tinnitus in the U.S. alone, which is a constant ringing, buzzing or roaring sound in one or both ears.

Thankfully, hearing aids and advanced management techniques can help alleviate any discomfort.

One question we get a lot: will someone’s hearing become poorer if they wait on hearing aids? Unfortunately, there’s no simple answer due to the different ways we can measure hearing loss.

In short, delaying the use of hearing devices will not impact the level of hearing loss in terms of the listener's ability to hear tones. However, the use of amplification will typically slow down or prevent something known as phonemic regression, which is progressively poorer speech understanding associated with longstanding hearing loss. Research shows that the longer a person lives with an uncorrected hearing loss, the poorer their speech understanding becomes.

When we hear sound, the nerve endings (individually known as “hair cells”) in a part of our inner ear known as the cochlea move due to the vibrations of sound energy, and they convert those vibrations into energy that our brains then perceive as sound.

However, if the sound vibrations are too large (such as with a very loud sound) damage to these delicate nerve endings can result. This damage to hearing typically occurs in the high-pitched ranges of hearing, where much of the meaning of speech is found. Thus, a person with a hearing loss due to noise exposure often indicates that they can hear the speech of others, but not understand what is being said.

The good news: recent developments in amplification have allowed us the tools to effectively treat this type of hearing loss, even if it is due to nerve damage in the inner ear.
