Did you know hearing loss is the third most common health-related problem in America, behind only high blood pressure and arthritis? More than 39 million Americans live with hearing loss, and over 50 million experience tinnitus, often described as ringing in the ears.

The risk increases with age, with 30% to 40% of adults aged 60 to 70 experiencing hearing loss. Yet more than half of people with untreated hearing loss have never had their hearing tested.

There are several disorders in the auditory system that may or may not be associated with hearing loss. Two of the more interesting include phonophobia (an extremely fearful reaction to a particular sound) and misophonia (an extreme dislike of a certain sound).
