The healthcare system is a business. It's the largest employer in almost every state, and it runs like anything that size runs: on volume, on throughput, on keeping the machine fed.

You think you're a patient. You're a customer, a dollar figure.

This isn't an accident. It traces back to 1910 and the Flexner Report, backed by Rockefeller and Carnegie money. That report decided which kinds of medicine got to survive and which got cut off at the knees.

As a provider, this is one of the reasons why we get frustrated.

When we speak with patients or potential patients and they ask, do you take insurance, THIS is the person they want you to see.

When we have patients tell us I'll just have my family doctor run the labs cause insurance covers it.

We can scream it from the roof tops but the truth is you will never get the health you seek with your run of the mill doctors who your insurance covers.

Period.

They were taught to manage disease, not to ask why you feel like a stranger in your own body when every number "looks fine."
