Have you ever wondered what voter registration actually is and why it’s important?

A lot of people assume voter registration is just a form you fill out once and forget about. In reality, it’s how election officials verify who you are, where you live, and which ballot you’re eligible to receive.

Whether you’ve recently moved, changed your name, gone away to college, or simply haven’t voted in a while, it’s important to make sure your voter registration information is current.

As part of the Civic Wellness series, we’re breaking down the basics of voting and civic engagement in a simple, approachable way because understanding how these systems work helps us better understand how decisions are made in our communities.

Watch today’s video to learn what voter registration means, why it matters, and how to keep your information up to date.

Your health, your community, and your future are all impacted by policy. 🗳️✨

Tonight’s Candidate Meet & Greet is an opportunity to hear directly from candidates running for U.S. and South Carolina House seats ahead of the June Primary Election.

As you listen, think beyond party lines and consider questions like:

💭 How will they support healthier communities?

💭 What are their plans around healthcare access, food access, housing, education, mental health, parks, safety, and economic opportunity?

💭 How do their decisions impact the overall wellness of Spartanburg County?

Civic wellness is community wellness. Your voice, your vote, and your questions matter.

Introducing Civic Wellness with Blk + Healthy. 🗳️✨

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be breaking down different parts of voting, local government, and civic engagement in a simple and approachable way because a lot of us were never fully taught how these systems work, even though they impact our everyday lives.

From schools and parks to transportation, housing, food access, and community resources, civic decisions play a major role in community wellness and quality of life.

Our first video in the series breaks down:
“What types of photo IDs are accepted for voting in South Carolina?”

The different types of accepted IDs are:

• South Carolina driver’s license
• South Carolina DMV ID card
• South Carolina voter registration card with photo
• Military ID
• U.S. passport

The goal of this series is not to tell people who to vote for, but to create more awareness, accessibility, and understanding around the systems that shape our communities.

Early voting for the June Primary Election in Spartanburg County and all over the state begins today. 🗳️

A lot of us were never truly taught how local elections work or how deeply they impact our everyday lives.

From roads and parks to schools, food access, transportation, recreation, and community resources ; local decisions shape the wellness of our communities more than many people realize.

In South Carolina, registered voters can vote early before Election Day at designated locations across the county.

This is a primary election, meaning voters are helping decide which candidates will move forward to the general election later this year.

You can choose which party’s primary you want to participate in, but you can only vote in ONE primary during this election.

To generally vote in South Carolina, you must:
• Be a U.S. citizen
• Be at least 18 years old by Election Day
• Be registered to vote
• Live in the county and precinct where you’re registered
• Present a valid photo ID

If you had a past felony conviction, you may still be eligible to vote after completing your sentence, probation, or parole.

Early voting runs May 27th – June 5th from 8:30 AM – 5 PM at designated Spartanburg County locations.

Our hope is to continue creating space for more community education, awareness, and conversations around how civic engagement connects to wellness and quality of life throughout Spartanburg County and the Upstate. 🧡✨

There’s something powerful about reconnecting with wonder as an adult. ✨🌍💫

Recently, I visited the planetarium at the Spartanburg County Public Libraries headquarters to experience Worlds Beyond Earth, narrated by Lupita Nyong’o.

From flying through Saturn’s rings to exploring distant worlds, the experience was immersive, educational, and beautiful.

A cool experience was learning about the constellations that would actually be visible in the downtown Spartanburg sky later that evening.

It also brought back memories of elementary school when Mr. Greene would bring in the portable inflatable planetarium so we could look at constellations. That experience stayed with me for years, and sitting in this planetarium reminded me how important it is for children and adults to experience moments that expand imagination and possibility.

I also enjoyed walking through the library and seeing the Kitty Black Perkins Lab display honoring Kitty Black Perkins, along with checking out the pendulum exhibit demonstrating the Earth’s rotation on its axis.
