Not every hair transplant is performed because of hair loss. A subset of patients have minimal to no hair loss but are interested in lowering or refining their hairline, as a smaller forehead is often considered more aesthetically pleasing.
Unlike patients with progressive hair loss, these cases generally do not have the same donor-to-recipient supply-and-demand limitations. This allows us to transplant at a more aggressive density.
This is one of the situations where the stick-and-place technique really excels. By making the smallest incision possible for each graft and placing it immediately, we can maximize density while minimizing tissue trauma and preserving the scalp's blood supply.
Shown here is a patient on postoperative day 14 following a hairline-lowering procedure. The transplanted hairline is demarcated by the green outline. At this stage, the grafts are secure, healing is progressing well, and the patient is entering the "ugly duckling" phase before new growth begins over the coming months.
