I just spent an incredible weekend at the 2026 MyoSphere Symposium in Raleigh, NC!

In the world of airway health and myofunctional therapy, learning never stops. I spent the last few days collaborating with top professionals to dive deep into the latest research and advanced therapy techniques including the critical role of myofunctional therapy in palatal expansion and orthognathic surgery to new techniques for relieving floor-of-mouth tension.

My goal is always to provide the best possible care for my patients. By staying at the forefront of orofacial myology, I’m bringing home new, effective strategies to help you and your family achieve better breathing, sleeping, and overall wellness.

I wish more people knew...

that sleep apnea doesn't just show up in adulthood.

It often starts in childhood-quietly, subtly-with something as simple as mouth breathing during sleep.

When a child consistently breathes through their mouth:
• The tongue rests low instead of supporting the palate
• The airway can begin to narrow over time
• Sleep quality and oxygen levels are impacted

Nasal breathing, on the other hand, supports proper growth, airway development, and restorative sleep.

This is why early intervention matters.

What if we focused on prevention… not just management? 🤔

When it comes to children, the signs of future airway and sleep issues often show up early—we just have to know what to look for.

🚩 Red flags parents and healthcare providers shouldn’t ignore:
• Mouth breathing
• Noisy breathing (day or night)
• Snoring or disrupted sleep
• Bruxism (dental wear/grinding)
• Narrow palate
• Enlarged tonsils
• Behavioral changes (irritability, focus issues)
• Tongue tie
• Mentalis strain (chin dimpling when closing lips)

These aren’t just “phases”—they can impact growth, development, and sleep quality over time.

Early intervention = better breathing, better sleep, better outcomes.

If something feels off, it’s worth looking into early. Awareness is the first step.

Your Tongue Affects Your Posture👅

The way your tongue rests in your mouth can influence how your entire body holds itself.

Ideal oral posture:
• Tongue on the roof of the mouth
• Lips closed
• Nasal breathing

When oral posture is off, the body often compensates with forward head posture, neck tension, rounded shoulders, headaches, and fatigue.

Sometimes improving posture starts with something as small as where your tongue rests.

Myofunctional therapy helps retrain the muscles of the tongue, lips, and airway to support better breathing, oral posture, and body posture.

Don’t just mask sleep apnea—let a myofunctional therapist help you retrain the muscles causing it so you can fix the function, not just the fatigue.

CPAP failure isn’t a patient problem.
It’s a model problem.

When 30 to 50 percent of people cannot tolerate CPAP, it tells us we are managing airflow at night without addressing why the airway collapses in the first place.

Poor tongue posture, orofacial muscle dysfunction, nasal resistance, tonsils, adenoids, craniofacial restriction and other physical obstructions matter. They shape the airway 24 hours a day, not just during sleep.

Treating pressure without correcting structure and function guarantees poor adherence.

Address causes first.
Support with devices second.

Your teeth aren't crooked again because your dog ate your retainer; it's because muscle dysfunction was never addressed.

One of the main causes of orthodontic relapse is untreated muscle dysfunction. The tongue, lips, and cheeks exert pressure on the teeth constantly. If these muscles don't function and rest properly, they can gradually push teeth out of alignment, even after successful orthodontic treatment.

Common factors include:
• Low or forward tongue posture
• Mouth breathing
• Lip incompetence
• Improper swallowing

💡Myofunctional therapy trains the muscles of the face, tongue, and airway to work correctly at rest and during everyday activities like breathing and swallowing. When these muscles are balanced, they support orthodontic results instead of working against them.

Think of orthodontics as moving the teeth, and myofunctional therapy as creating the muscle environment that maintains their position.
