There is still time to have your local healthcare provider attend this conference and get a better understanding of Lyme disease and tick-borne illnesses! Encourage them to attend!

This past weekend was spent at the Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners! ILADS was represented at the NATCAPLYME table and they are offering a fundamentals course in June for all medical professionals: MDs, DOs, NPs, PAs, pharmacists, PTs, etc. If you have a med pro in your life that is interested, pass along the info!

Beware the summer "flu"! If you or someone you love develops flu-like symptoms about 2 weeks after an outdoor activity, it could be the first sign of acute Lyme disease. Appropriate treatment is essential to limit the risk of the disease becoming chronic!

And yet healthcare providers over and over again dismiss patients with vague symptoms that don’t fall into easy fixable categories. The state of VA recognized lyme disease can be diagnosed clinically over a decade ago, precisely because of the inadequacy of testing. But patients STILL fight to be seen and heard.

As the weather improves, and folks spend more time outdoors, I encourage everyone to take steps to prevent tick bites: permethrin on clothing and gear, picaridin on exposed skin and tick checks after spending time outdoors!

Protect yourself whenever you engage in outdoor activities but tucking pant legs into your socks and wrapping with duct tape - sticky side out, wearing tick and insect repellent on your clothes and skin, and taking a shower as soon as you come indoors. Remember to protect your kids and pets!
