SEPTEMBER IS SICKLE CELL AWARENESS MONTH ❤️

Sickle cell disease is more than a blood disorder—it can affect the entire body and cause serious complications throughout a person’s life.

🩸 What is Sickle Cell Disease?
It is an inherited blood disorder that causes red blood cells to become hard, sticky, and sickle-shaped. These cells can block normal blood flow and prevent oxygen from reaching tissues.

⚠️ Possible complications include:
• Episodes of severe pain
• Anemia and extreme fatigue
• Frequent infections
• Acute chest syndrome
• Stroke
• Kidney and other organ complications

👶 Did you know?
Babies born in the United States are routinely screened for sickle cell disease as part of newborn screening.

❤️ KNOW YOUR STATUS. KNOW YOUR FAMILY HISTORY.

If you have sickle cell disease or sickle cell trait, regular healthcare visits and understanding your individual risks are important parts of staying healthy.

This September, let’s continue raising awareness, supporting individuals and families living with sickle cell disease, and encouraging our communities to learn their status.

💙 PROSTATE CANCER CAN BE SILENT 💙
September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

One of the most important things for men to know about prostate cancer is this:

👉 Early prostate cancer often causes NO symptoms.

That means feeling fine doesn’t always mean there’s nothing to discuss with your healthcare provider.

When symptoms do occur, they may include:

🔹 Trouble starting or stopping urination
🔹 Weak or interrupted urine flow
🔹 Urinating more often, especially at night
🔹 Blood in the urine or semen
🔹 Pain or burning with urination
🔹 Persistent pain in the back, hips, or pelvis
🔹 Erectile difficulties

⚠️ These symptoms can also be caused by conditions other than cancer, but they shouldn’t be ignored.

💙 EARLY DETECTION MATTERS.

A simple conversation about your age, family history, race, and other risk factors can help determine whether PSA testing or additional evaluation is appropriate for you.

🌾 In rural Louisiana, taking care of men’s health starts with making preventive care a priority.

This September, remind the men you love:

Don’t wait for symptoms.
Know your risk.
Have the conversation.

💙 SEPTEMBER IS PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS MONTH 💙

Louisiana men, this is one health screening conversation we should not ignore.

📊 The numbers are especially important for Louisiana:
Recent National Cancer Institute data show Louisiana had an age-adjusted prostate cancer incidence rate of about 147 cases per 100,000 men, compared with about 116 per 100,000 nationally during 2018–2022. Louisiana ranked among the states with the highest prostate cancer incidence, with approximately 4,158 new cases diagnosed each year during that period.

Even more concerning, Louisiana’s prostate cancer incidence trend has been rising. (State Cancer Profiles)

👨🏾‍⚕️ Know when to start the conversation.

The American Cancer Society recommends discussing the benefits and risks of prostate cancer screening with your healthcare provider beginning around:

🔹 Age 50 — Men at average risk
🔹 Age 45 — Black/African American men and men with a father or brother diagnosed with prostate cancer before age 65
🔹 Age 40 — Men at even higher risk, including certain men with multiple close relatives affected at an early age (American Cancer Society)

A PSA blood test may be part of that screening decision.

🌾 For our rural Louisiana communities: access to preventive care matters. Don’t wait until you’re having symptoms to start talking about your prostate health.

💙 This September, encourage the fathers, husbands, brothers, sons, friends, and neighbors in your life to KNOW THEIR RISK and TALK TO THEIR HEALTHCARE PROVIDER.

❤️ SOMETIMES THE PERSON WHO NEEDS A RIDE ISN’T THE ONLY PERSON AFFECTED.

In Louisiana’s rural communities, transportation often depends on family members, friends, and caregivers.

Louisiana health data show that rural residents may face longer travel distances and limited access to healthcare services, pharmacies, and other essential resources. When transportation is unavailable, family members and caregivers may have to miss work, rearrange schedules, or travel long distances to help.

That tells us something important:

Reliable transportation support can matter for the entire household.

The Rural Health Concierge Program can provide another option for families who can’t always leave work, travel long distances, or rearrange their schedules.

🚗 Scheduled medical transportation
💊 Pharmacy pickup & delivery
🛒 Grocery pickup & delivery
🌾 Extended rural transportation

This service isn’t only for the member.

It can also provide another layer of support for the daughter, son, spouse, neighbor, or caregiver who’s been trying to do it all.

💚 August is Gastroparesis Awareness Month

Ever feel full after eating just a few bites? It may be more than just a sensitive stomach.

Gastroparesis is a condition in which the stomach empties food more slowly than normal.

Symptoms may include:
• Feeling full very quickly
• Nausea or vomiting
• Bloating
• Upper abdominal discomfort
• Poor appetite
• Changes in blood sugar levels

Gastroparesis can occur for several reasons, and diabetes is one of the most common known causes.

Persistent digestive symptoms shouldn’t be ignored. If you’re frequently experiencing nausea, early fullness, bloating, or difficulty eating, talk with your healthcare provider.

💚 Let’s close August by bringing awareness to a condition that can significantly affect nutrition, blood sugar management, and quality of life.

🌾 WHY RURAL ACCESS MATTERS IN LOUISIANA

Healthcare may be available — but that doesn’t always mean it’s easy to reach.

According to the CDC, approximately 73% of Louisiana’s rural population lives within a 15-minute drive of a Rural Health Clinic.

But that also means geographic gaps remain, and the CDC specifically identified vulnerable areas along Louisiana’s Mississippi Delta where proximity to rural health clinics is limited.

For rural families, getting healthcare can involve:

🚗 Longer drives
🏥 Traveling outside the community for certain services
💊 Trips to the pharmacy
👨‍👩‍👧 Depending on family or friends for transportation

The Ramirez Healthcare Rural Health Concierge Program is being designed with those realities in mind.

🚗 Medical transportation
💊 Pharmacy pickup & delivery
🛒 Grocery pickup & delivery
🌾 Extended transportation options up to 50 miles
