Getting a little personal over here on our feed at Act4Kids Nevada today with a post from one of our founding board members, Chelsea ⬇️
“This photo is from 2018, 3 years into Navy’s neuroblastoma cancer fight. She was 6 years old here and with years of cancer treatment, she was so tired of many really tough doctor’s appointments! She ended up developing a lot of anxiety around the pokes that would come at these appointments and had really a difficult time anytime she needed “accessed” (getting poked with a needle in her port) for labs.
Sue, an incredible Child Life Specialist, became such an amazing tool in helping with these types of medical procedures. As you can see in this picture, Sue learned that something that helped lessen the anxiety was reading to her, a favorite being “Junie B Jones”, which Sue did in the best voices!
Sue taught Navy about her cancer, and why she had to go to so many appointments, she also encouraged Navy to talk to her classmates at school and gave her language on how to explain why she had to be gone so much. I found that as a parent, I was often using phrases that Sue taught me throughout the years of her treatment in talking to Navy or explaining things to family and friends.
Navy had a 6 1/2 year cancer fight, and unfortunately passed away in 2021. We are forever grateful for the amazing helpers along the way, especially Sue! I felt so grateful when Sue agreed to being interviewed for Act4Kids Nevada, she has such a comprehensive and unique view on the healthcare in our state.”
