Bezisterim – the Best Long COVID Drug Trial Yet? BioVie Aims for a Big, Phase III Trial

The topline results for Bezesterim - a novel anti-neurinflammatory - drug - rolled in for long COVID.

Early results suggested that Bezesterim produced moderate results across a broad range of symptoms, making it the most successful long COVID trial yet.

Better yet may be coming when researchers roll in the extensive biomarker results.

IVO-21 – A Paradigm Changer AND a Mitochondrial Drug for ME/CFS?

Weird things are happening at the NIH. Two senior intramural mitochondrial researchers are digging into ME/CFS (!). And one of them has developed a hot new mitochondrial drug.

Long COVID Study Finds Major Energy Deficits in the Brain

Studies have suggested that the brain's energy levels might be low in long COVID, but we didn't know for sure.

Recently, a study seems to have answered that question. Using a technique that directly measures energy availability, it found a big drop in energy production right in the part of the brain that Jarred Younger believes plays the key role in ME/CFS and long COVID.

The Fatigue in ME/CFS and Long COVID Comes From the Brain … Or does it?

A recent NIH brain and muscle study concluded that the fatigue in ME/CFS is being produced by the brain.

Other studies, though, suggest that the damaged muscles in ME/CFS/long COVID could be tweaking the brain.

Actually, both could be happening. A recent finding suggests that an infection could be producing both.

One thing has become clear - the brain and muscles are both intimately connected in these diseases - and need to be studied together.

The UK’s Long COVID Triple Treatment Trial (Not Surprisingly) Bombs

The UK's big shot at uncovering treatments for long COVID failed dismally, with all three drugs/drug combos not producing clinically significant results.

This extends a rather unsettling streak of at least a dozen large long COVID treatment trials that have gone belly up.

A closer look at the UK trial left one asking, however, if it ever really had much chance of succeeding.

Similarly, an overview of the large long COVID trials done so far, makes one wonder if we could have ever expected much from them.

The good news is that the long COVID field is learning, and the newer trials feature better options, are more targeted, more interested in uncovering subsets and in exploring mechanisms.

In short, we can expect better results.

Stepping Backwards – the U.S.’s Attempt to Politicize Scientific Research: An Editorial

The Trump administration has proposed new rules that will, among other things, give political appointees the last say on which research grants get funded, and would allow the NIH to defund ongoing studies with evidence of malfeasance.

In this editorial, I propose that these changes are not good for medical research and could pose particular threats to diseases like ME/CFS and long COVID. Please note that the ability to comment on these new rules ends tomorrow night.

Visible At Last? Are Long COVID and ME/CFS Tissue Diseases? The PolyBio 2026 Symposium Pt I

PolyBio's 6th symposium was its best yet. In part one of a two-part series, we heard about their $10 million Long COVID Cure project, which they believe will cut 15 years off what would otherwise have been an interminably long search for treatments.

Then it was onto a series of presentations focusing on tissue studies (arteries, lymph, retina, gut, brainstem), which suggested that if you want to get to the heart of these diseases, you've got to go deep into the tissues.

Finally, we heard some good early news about two gut treatments that appear to be having an impact.

Hitting the Target? ME/CFS and long COVID T-Cell Researchers on Uncovering the Precise Drivers of the Illnesses

Researchers are increasingly confident that precision medicine - the ability to match a treatment to your biology - is coming for these diseases.

T-cell researchers are at the top of that list. Not only are they now sure that these diseases are driven by pathogens/autoimmune processes, but they've also begun using sophisticated technologies they believe will allow them to uncover the precise drivers of these illnesses.

Whether long COVID is an autoimmune disease has been one of the great questions facing the field.

Finally, we have an answer. It is, at least, in part. A recent study provided dramatic evidence that autoimmune processes are significantly affecting many long COVID patients - and it bolstered autoimmune work in ME/CFS as well.

There's still a lot of work to do - tracking down which autoantibodies are doing the damage is not going to be easy in these complex disorders, but it is doable, and it is one place this field will likely concentrate on after this study.

The goal, as always, will be to precisely match LC and ME/CFS patients to the appropriate autoimmune treatment.

Solving the ME/CFS and Long COVID Jigsaw Puzzle: PrecisionLife’s Steven Gardner Talks

PrecisionLife believes they can break the code on ME/CFS and long COVID and they're back with new, much larger ME/CFS study.

Instead of 14 genes they found over 2,000! In a talk with CEO and founder Steve Gardner, he explained that ME/CFS is highly complex but solveable, reported that PrecisionLife has identified over 40 drugs that they think may help, noted that ME/CFS and long COVID are similar but different, and pointed to a fascinating process whereby PrecisionLife is identifying "resilience genes" that a) protect people from coming down with ME/CFS and b) could help people recover from it.
