Hospice of Hilo is non-profit organization dedicated to providing compassionate, quality care to serious and terminally-ill patients through support, counseling and education to our East Hawai‘i Community. We envision a community where everyone is touched by compassionate care, finding comfort and peace in a time of need. Hospice of Hilo brings together the support services of physicians, nurses,

social workers, spiritual and grief counselors and trained volunteers to provide care focused on the whole person: body, mind and spirit. Hospice of Hilo provides care for patients in East Hawai‘i spanning Laupāhoehoe to South Point, Ka‘ū. We are a private, non-profit agency, governed by a 15-member board of directors from the East Hawai‘i community. Hospice of Hilo is a member agency of the Hawaii Island United way and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.

The crazy part is that you never see it from our team. They are constantly and consistently showing up 100% in all they do. We are in this work because we love this work.

some goodbyes don’t feel like goodbyes.

they feel like a lei placed gently in your hands. like a candle flickering in the dark. like a name written carefully on paper, because even now, even still, they deserve to be remembered.

that’s what the Celebration of Life is about.

every year, our community comes together at Reed’s Bay to honor the ones we’ve loved and lost. we decorate luminaries, paper lanterns, with their pictures, their words, the art that reminds us of them. and as the sun sets over Hilo bay, we walk those lanterns to the water and let them float.

We’re also honoring the traditions of tooro nagashi and the season of obon with a bon dance, because grief looks different for all of us, and celebration does too. come as you are. bring your family. bring your memories.

there is space here for all of it.

Sometimes we have to be brave and do the hard things! 💪

Our team takes on new challenges all the time and we fully understand that sometimes you don’t always know what to do next. We’re so excited for this new expansion of services to and we will bring our best.

We also know that stepping out of your normal is hard. Reaching out for help when things are scary is hard. Trusting new people is hard. But you are amazing, and we know that reaching out for support with a serious illness is the first step to having a team of people with you to help remind you how amazing you are when things get hard again.

This is that iconic Barbie audio where Ken is hovering and Barbie needs her space. Our staff recreated the scene in the HCC office, and honestly? The comedic timing is chef’s kiss. But here’s what it really shows: how tight we are as a team and how much we care about getting this expansion right. Because you deserve our best, and we’re committed to bringing it.
