The Danger of Ayahuasca in the Hands of ‘Plastic Shamans’

A message I received recently:
"Hi Claudia, we met last year when Pajé Mana, Radusha and Vesku were in Edinburgh. I wanted to share something that's been on my mind. Over the years, I've known a number of people who took part i so-called Ayahuasca ceremonies led by people who've been to the Amazon and come back claiming to be shamans qualified to lead these ceremonies. I think it is really, really bad news. I've seen people develop what I consider to be incurable mental illnesses through doing these things - they are no longer able to function properly in everyday society, and it's hard to see how they will come back in this lifetime.

I always say: if people like Pajé and Vesku lead these ceremonies within the specific environment and cultural context of the Amazonian tribes, it works, because they hold the tradition of how to do these things and have been working with this plant for possibly tens of thousands of years.

But when white people who are 'plastic shamans' get hold of th run alleged ceremonies - charging money for them - it is very dangerous. This is just my opinion, based on what I've observed.”

My response:

My dear friend, this subject is very close to my heart and very what I wrote about in my book Shamanism as Medicine. Ayahuasca is a sacred medicine that demands respect and reverence - it's not something to approach casually.

I'm unequivocal about this: people should never participate in ceremonies facilitated by non-indigenous practitioners. They lack t spiritual knowledge and training necessary to work with these medicines and their forces. Most problematic are those who attend handful of ceremonies in the Jungle, then position themselves as legitimate facilitators. That's precisely why I bring people to Brazil to work with Pajé Mana, Vesku, and Radusha - authentic practitioners who hold this medicine as their ancestral inheritance and truly understand what they're doing. They've been immersed in a living tradition since childhood, a lineage that safeguards the medicine's sacredness.

There’s a reason the forest has always felt like medicine to me. 🌲✨

In seasons of grief, burnout, overwhelm, transition, and deep spiritual work, the trees have held me without needing words. The forest reminds me to slow down, breathe deeper, listen differently, and reconnect to what is sacred beneath the noise of the world.

For me, nature is not separate from healing work. it is healing work.

> A place to decompress.
> A place to connect with Spirit.
> A place to remember ancestral wisdom still carried in the land, the roots, the air, and the body.

Sometimes the most profound medicine isn’t found in forcing, fixing, or rushing… but in allowing ourselves to simply be held by our Great Mother Earth. 🍃

2 days of quite solitude in rainy New England while hubby on his solo motorcycle journey. No tv. No music. No "doing work". Silence.

The Sun finally came out late today. I emerged after lots and lots of sleep, Journaling & reflection while partaking in a class by Brig Feltus, and also tending to the yard and garden, the cat, the dog, the fish all vying for my attention.

Now I step out and breathe this afternoon. Listening to wooded areas and the changing tides speak. Life returned. Birds chirping. Chipmunks scurrying by. Squirrels chasing each like a ring around the Rosie on trees. Egrits grooming themselves in the waters. Ducks quietly enjoying the change. Momma and Poppa goose watching over their three babies.

All this in less than 30 minutes. I took it all in breathing and choosing to sing my prayers and offerings to the forest, trees, and waters no matter how crackly my voice is right now.

I'm just choosing to tend to the roots of it all internal and external.

I took a semi digital hiatus this weekend.

So I'll be answering messages, emails, etc by tomorrow. Thank you for your patience.

➡️ How are you spending this weekend? What are you choosing to celebrate, pray for, memorialize?

What the Water Remembers. Reflections from Niagara Falls. Enjoy

I just returned from Niagara Falls for my anniversary with my husband and I felt called to the waters in a different way and mourned over what was absent and it made me appreciate the fight for First Nations even more.

"This water … these falls received every one of us without discrimination. No race. No religion. No hierarchy. None of the things we humans like to attach to one another was witnessed by the water. It was a moment captured between the water and the people who came to stand before it. That is the truth of this place, before the impending spectacle tries to swallow it whole.

Ya know, that other reality exists too. Streets filled with casinos, commercialization, gadgets, flashing lights, toxic food and drink, and all the stuff they want to sell, sell, sell. So, you can buy buy, buy, and consume. This includes the tourists who cycle through for a photo op before moving on, leaving their gluttony of trash behind expecting the falls fairy realms will magically clean up after them. It is, in many ways, a kind of Vegas grafted onto one of the most sacred natural sites on this entire continent.

And what I found most conspicuous in all of it was an absence. The absence ate through me like a flesh-eating bacterium. I sat and wondered who else there noticed it too in all noise and distractions. On both sides of the waters in both countries, the feeling was palatable."

Recently I posted a request for Reiki volunteers to work with a vulnerable elderly population in a nursing home, the majority of whom live with some form of dementia.

Instead of being met with curiosity or appreciation, it was met with suspicion, challenge, and ultimately, character attacks by an individual.

That trajectory is worth examining carefully in what was said, how, perception, and ultimately discernment on whether or not this behavior is a form of ABUSE.

Whether you are in the wellness spaces, Reiki world, or any other spiritual space, please consider reading my latest substack and let me know how it lands for you.

Every month we walk into the nursing home thinking we're there to give Reiki... & every month we leave having received just as much.

In a world that is actively cutting funding for hospice programs and elder services... where towns all around us are facing closures that directly affect our seniors... these moments matter more than ever.

Because here's what we don't think about: one day, this will be us.

Many of the residents we sit with are living with dementia. They may not remember our names or the day... but they remember kindness. They remember touch, presence, laughter, and the feeling of being truly seen.

And something begins to shift.

Hands begin to unclench. Faces begin to soften. Stories emerge and surface. That spark of human connection returns.

Before the "burning times of witches" aka women ... before the erasure of the old ways... it was the elders who held communities together. They were the wisdom carriers, crones, healers, judges, nurturers of younger generations. They were the ones who bridged the worlds.

We have moved so far from that.

There is so much wounding between generations right now... & yet sitting beside our elders reminds us of something sacred. Every stage of life holds dignity & wisdom worth honoring.

I'm an elder in training, & I want to be part of restoring that bridge... learning now, so that when it is my time, I know how to carry that wisdom forward.

If we discard our seniors now... who'll be there for us when it is our time?

Volunteering Reiki in these spaces was never just about healing others.

It's about remembering our humanity... together.

Grateful for fellow volunteers who join us in this Reiki journey together.

Cat Antics

I bought another new smaller hand Gong last weekend to use in 1:1 sessions, events, and the monthly full moon vibrational healing gatherings

I brought it home to play with more, set it down while working on a task, and the cat decides, it's their new cat bed instead.

Who does that? hahaha

Btw he also like to sleep in my husband's mandolin case too. hahaha

In the meantime, we have amazing seasoned facilitators and elders who are part of the Healing With Spirit family. Join in a class, 1:1, or event

Well… I missed my train stop and somehow ended up in Harvard Yard.

What’s strange is it only took me about 20 minutes to get here today when this trip normally takes anywhere from 45 minutes to over an hour. So instead of fighting it, I decided to walk.

And as I walked through Harvard Yard, I could feel the weight and complexity of it all.

The duality.
The contradictions.

The brilliance and opportunity intertwined with elitism, power, persecution, exploitation, silence, and the long shadow of harm woven through institutions that shaped this country.

Walking through these spaces while carrying awareness of Epi-pen-stein, Dire-showitz, jellocide, colonization, class systems, diversity yet white supremacist and all the things we’re told not to connect together… it does something to the body. The land feels it. The nervous system feels it.

And somewhere in the middle of all of that, I came across an old wise tree whose spirit revealed themselves to me.

It was a quiet moment and acknowledgement of all of it ... a reminder from the spirit realms that what is unfolding next is supported, even if the path there is unconventional.

Sometimes missing the stop is the medicine.

Sometimes missing the stop is redirection.

I am honoring all that is, all that was, and all that shall be as i sit on a nearby bench awaiting for a friend to arrive, a fellow crone about healing the land on the South Shore ... wounds and harm that have never truly ended since the birth of the USA.

So much of what is ailing us was seeded here, in Boston and the South Shore, and still echoes through the land, the waters, the bodies, and the systems we move through today.

The work continues..

For now, happy Tuesday. It’s a beautiful sunny spring day here in New England. ☀️ Take a pause and smell the lilacs.
