This isn't the full speech given by Rocky to his son in the movie "Rocky Balboa". It is just part of it on a poster that hangs above the staircase at home. It is strategically placed such that I walk beneath it everyday. It's there to serve as a reminder to keep moving forward, no matter what. "If you know what you're worth then go out and get what you're worth, but you gotta be willing to take the hits"....

Read that again - "choice, not chance". This is true in SO many aspects of our lives. Is it happening TO us or FOR us? What are we choosing for ourselves? Make no mistake, you have a choice no matter what your circumstance. Epictetus was a slave and he is commonly credited as one of the founders of the philosophy of Stoicism. So, what are we going to do today? Blame others for our lot in life? Or take our power back and make a choice for ourselves. As Jim Collins wrote in his book "Good to Great", "Greatness is not a function of circumstance. Greatness, it turns out is largely a conscious CHOICE." Be great today.

You Are What You Practice

Whether you realize it or not, you are practicing something every day.

Each time you follow through, you are practicing discipline. Each time you put something off, you are practicing delay. Every time you choose patience, restraint, effort, or attention, you are adding fuel to one kind of fire. Every time you give in to distraction, temper, avoidance, or impulse, you are adding fuel to another.

This is why habits matter so much. They do not just shape your routine. They shape your character.

The best case scenario is for us to choose what we're practicing on a daily basis, get intentional about it and take action.

What are you practicing today?

Taking a queue from the world of physics we might call these decisions the vectors of our lives. Almost every area of physics utilizes vectors to map physical phenomena in space. Here are some fundamental examples: Displacement: The shortest straight-line distance from an object's starting point to its ending point, including the direction of that movement. Velocity: The speed of an object along with the direction it is traveling. Acceleration: The rate at which an object's velocity changes, including the direction of that change. Force: A push or pull acting upon an object, which inherently requires the force to be applied in a specific direction. Momentum: A measure of an object's motion, calculated as the product of its mass and velocity, pointing in the same direction as the velocity. You may have noted that every one of the physical areas listed mentions Direction. So, you see, as in physics, so in life, to get to where we want to go most quickly align your Vectors (Decisions).

Progress, success and results often boil down to this simple fundamental question. We don't always know what we SHOULD do next, but we can usually find something we CAN do, which then becomes the SHOULD in that moment. MOMENTum is really just a series of moments strung together. What CAN you do? Seize your moment.

In the chorus of "Brown Bird's" song "Bilgewater" they sing: "In spite of all, the wherewithal, to fight it all, I will face it all. In spite of all, the wherewithal, to fight it all, I'll embrace it all." This suggests that we not only face our problems and fears, but embrace them, embrace them as part of the process necessary for growth and improvement. This is where many of us stop because it's uncomfortable. "Brown Bird" goes on to sing: "When everyday is like a war between the will to go on and a wish that world would spiral into the sun, turn your head toward the storm that's surely coming along", "If the sun was always shining and our load always light we'd be shaking like a leaf with every God given night and we'd break under the weight of any pressure that was ever applied."
